that will benefit northern Ontario agri-
culture.
The program, announced in July, is
sponsored by the Ministry of Northern
Affairs. and operated by the Ministry of
Agriculture and Food.
"We have had very good response to the
program so far," says Mr. Paulhus. "We
have received 35 applications."
Grant applications cover a wide variety
of projects, ranging from solar green-
houses to tile drainage. Several programs
involve innovative ideas to improve the
marketing of northern Ontario agricultural
products.
The projects are evaluated on their
ability to benefit northern Ontario agricul-
ture, explains Mr. Paulhus. The tech-
nology used may not be new to northern
Ontario. but it may be new to certain areas
of the north.
For example, tile drainage is common in
many parts of southern Ontario. H owever.
it is relatively new to most of northern
Ontario. The installation of tile drainage in
northern Ontario's clay soils increases the
variety of crops that can be Brown.
Individual farmers, groups of farmers•
farm organizations, and small agricultural
businesses located in northern Ontario. are
eligible to apply for incentive grants.
