"Direct seeding also saves energy
costs," says Mr. Skepast. "Farmers save
the cost of plowing and double disking.
However, reduced cultivation means
that farmers will probably have to control
perennial broadleaf weeds with herbicides
one year prior to seeding. It is important to
maintain the legumes in pastures because
they contain high quality protein, and also
save nitrogen.
"The more active the legumes, the
better the grasses will perform," he says.
To obtain the most successful results,
Mr. Skepast recommends grazing the
pasture close to the ground prior to
seeding. This will reduce competition while
the legumes are growing. After seeding.
the grazing should be controlled to allow
proper establishment of legumes.
Cloning beef?
Clonr g, the new scientific discovery
that allows us to produce identical versions
of ourselves. may be something the beef
industry should be researching.
C.M. Williams of the University of
Saskatchewan recently suggested that
cloning cattle to produce identical versions
of highly efficient animals is worth
researching.
Mr. Williams told a beef seminar that
not only is research not being done in key
areas but "We're not even producing the
researchers, let alone funding them."
Harvey Trimble, a pure -breed breeder
from Okotoks, Alberta also raised the issue
of cloning at the seminar.
Mr. Trimble described the technique as
a process of embryo splitting -separating
the cells of an embryo, putting them into a
membrane in which an embryo grows and
planting that in a host cow.
Agriculture in
Northern Ontario
is changing
The face of agriculture in northern
Ontario is changing. The industry is
becoming more diverse and productive.
Through incentive grants, the provincial
government is encouraging development of
farms and agricultural service industries,
says Marcel Paulhus, Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food area coordinator.
