agriculture, they included questionnaires from farm owners who
had actually employed women, just to back up their belief that
women and farming do mix.
As one of the girls said, the farmers who employed women
aren't discriminating against men - it's what they know about the
girls they hire that leads to their decision to employ women
farmhands.
Some of the reasons given for hiring the women was that they
are dependable, more patient with animals, they recognized the
importance of sanitation on the farm and aren't as tempermental
as males.
As ones farmer wrote, "We wanted a girl because they are
more efficient when feeding dairy calves and cleaning the
milking parlor. They don't mind working in the barn when the
men go the fields. The boys (we hired) all wanted to be involved
with the machinery work."
Another farmer responded that he found women "can work
steadily without supervision" and as an added bonus, "if a girl is
on the farm working other male help on the farm try to compete
with her."
Finally, one man couldn't resist pointing out a final benefit of
the female touch - "Hire a girl, you'll be glad and so will the
neighbours' soms."
Whatever the reason women choose to enter agriculture and
whatever the reason farm operators employ, one thing is certain.
Women are becoming an increasingly important factor in the
Canadian agriculture business.
