The Rural Voice, 1978-12, Page 37take a ball of dough 1'/2" in diameter and
roll between palsm of hands. Press flat but
not too thin, and shape into body of your
figure.. Use more dough for larger figures.
For the bodies of three-dimensional,
free-standing figures, crinkle a 4" x 4"
piece of alumin7tm foil into a ball. Flatten
out a 3" ball of dough aid wrap it around
the wad of foil. Smooth out surface with
,fingers. You might want to use a smaller
ball for the head. Just press it onto the
main body, touching surfaces with water for.
extra stick.
Legs, Ears, Beaks: Press tiny, shaped
pieces of dough Into body or head. Roll
dough into small "snakes" and press
against body for legs of sitting figures.
Good for tails, too. Draw toes and other
details with toothpick.
Hair, Feathers: Beautiful hair for an
angel's head, lion's mane or cat's tail can
be made by forcing dough through a garlic
pressto the length you want. Then shave it
off carefully with toothpick and lay it on
head or body, arranging gently with
fingers. Feather shapes can be made for
wings or to cnv er an entire breast of a
large owl Pres 3/4 " balls of dough flat and
slightly oval: draw feather marks with
toothpick. Then overlap feathers in rows on
body, pressing each on with a touch of
water.
Mirrors: Shiny mirrors make very
expressive eyesfor your dough figures. You
can even make a child's lion mirror; use a
mirror for the face, with mane all around.
The lion's body forms the handle. To set
mirrors in dough, roll dough into a fat
"snake" to rim the mirror and ccNer its
edge. Then place mirror and rim on body of
the figure. You can use rim to attach hair
•or, after baking, to draw eyelashes on. Do
not bake mirrors that are over 2" in
diameter; they will crack. Bake the rim
first; then attach the mirror by first glueing
it on a felt backing, cut to measure, then
glueing the whole thing to rim.
Decoration: Adorn your figures with
sequins, seashells, buttons --whatever you
like. Before baking, you can paint them
with food coloring (mixed in a little water)
or after baking with bright acrylic paints.
For Christmas tree ornaments, add wire
hanger or pierce hole for a bright ribbon
before baking.
Baking: Bake in oven at 350 degrees.
Small ornaments will take about 30
minutes; large pieces nearer to an hour.
Tap with finger; figures should be very
ard.
Finishing: For pins or hair clips, _slit a
small niece of felt in two places and 'glue on
ba. kof figure. Slip bobby pin or sagety pin
through slits. Spray or paint all figures
with clear polyurethane coating. Your
dough sculpture should last indefintely.
