Regional tests conducted last summer in 19 Iocations in Ontario indicated that Bruce performed best in northern Wellington County and Huron County, and in the New Liskeard and Ottawa areas, says Dr. Reinbergs. "It did not fare well in Lambton and Kent Counties this year because of drought,"' he says. This variety was released to SeCan, a co-operative Canadian seed distributor, in 1977. Last summer it was distributed to seed growers. "There will be plenty of Bruce barley available to growers next year," says Dr. Reinbergs. "However, to ensure your supply, order early." Good cattle handling facilities a necessity Good cattle -handling facilities are a must for the modern beef operation, says John Forsyth, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food beef cattle specialist. "Not only do these facilities improve safety conditions, they can also improve economic returns." he says. Many modern management practices require that the animals be properly restrained. Ropes are unsatisfactory. They can be dangerous for the animal and the farmer. "Modern cattle -handling facilities in- clude pen, narrow working chute, and head gate," says Mr. Forsyth. "This makes it possible for producers to take advantage of procedures that will make their animals more salesable." For example, many producers realize that implanting growth promotants in- creases rate of gain and economic return. Because the implant is inserted in the animal's ear, the animal must be re- strained with a head gate. For the cow -calf operator, good handling facilities make it easier to artificially inseminate cows. Pregnancy testing is also more convenient, says Mr. Forsyth. Proper handling facilities also make dehorning. castration, and warble treat- ments easier. When health problems occur, handling facilities can also make diagnosis and treatment easier. For maximum effectiveness, handling systems should be located close to the cattle. Mr. Forsyth suggests that producers tie handling systems together with other facilities, such as the holding pen, loading chute, and weighing scales Oesch Woodworking oa Wood Sash g FRAMES CUSTOM DOORS q2:4 Designed to your specification Telephone 482-7657 MAITLAND METAL Et FABRICATING * * CUSTOM BUILT ORNAMENTAL RAILING* * 24 HOUR PORTABLE WELDING* * Farrowing Crates Especially designed to prevent loss of life, maximum mobility, ease of feeding.
