Fences are an excellent short-term
solution. he says, but trees provide
permanent snow control.
Next spring, close -plant two rows of
coniferoustrces on the laneway's windward
side. Plant the first row 18 m from the
laneway, and the second row 1.2 m further
back. Deciduous trees are ineffective
because they lose foliage in the fall.
"When the trees have grown to a height
of 3 m, they will keep most snow from the
lane. Even before they reach that height,
the trees reduce the force of the wind."
Where possible. position fences or trees
to block prevailing north-westerly winds.
Advisory program
can save '100
COW
Dairy farmers report savings 01 up to
$100 per cow using the Feed Advisory
Program offered by the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food.
Last year the program supplied more
than 1,200 Ontario dairy producers with
computer -formulated rations. says Stewart
Cressman, program coordinator.
"The feed advisory program helps
farmers improve herd performance, and
cut nutrient and feed costs." he says.
Ration formulation begins with a chem-
ical analysis of homegrown feeds. Farmers
with the assistance of ministry extension
personnel, take feed samples for testing at
the University of Guelph.
Cost of the feed tests range from $7 to
$16, depending on the type of analysis
required. Laboratory tests include tests for
dry matter, crude protein, calcium. phos-
phorous, magnesium. potassium, and trace
minerals.
Last year the feed testing laboratory
handled more than 6200 samples.
Although it is possible to formulate
rations without feed analysis, Mr. Cressman
feels analysis is the key to accurate ration
formulation.
"If tests ,show the hay is worse than
average, we can increase supplements to
balance the ration properly.".
In order to formulate rations quickly and
accurately, the program uses computers at
the Canfarm Service Agency of Agriculture
Canada.
Using the results of feed analysis, the
computer calculates a biologically balanced
ration.
Mr. Cressman stresses that these rations
are developed to make the best possible
use of homegrown feeds and purchased
supplements. "These rations are custom-
built around the existing feeding system,
and personal feeding preferences," he
says.

Bruce barley coming
Bruce Barley. a promising new variety
developed at the University of Guelph, will
be available to commercial growers next
year.
This early -maturing variety achieved the
highest average yield in three years of
extensive variety testing, says Dr. Ernie
Reinbergs, University of Guelph crop
scientist.
Bruce, and its predecessors, Perth and
Trent, were developed through the crop
science department breeding program,
sponsored by the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food.
This variety has good potential for
Ontario farmers, says Dr. Reinbergs. Yields
are above average, with records of 3500 kg
per hectare. The provincial on-farm
average yield for barley is 2800 kg per
hectare.
One of the most attractive characteristics
of Bruce barley is its genetic tolerance to
spot blotch, a fungus disease that affects
older Ontario varieties.
"This variety is also resistant to mildew,
the major disease affecting barley crops in
the Guelph area," he says.
Lodging has always been one of the
problems facing barley growers. But
Bruce, because it has short straw, has good
