When presenting his budget, Jean
Chretien, minister of finance, blamed the
increase in the cost of living on the jump in
food prices and the fall of the dollar.
"I don't know how you are going to get
food produces if you aren't going to pay
anybody for it," Mr. Hannam said.
The OFA president said cuts in the
federal sales tax could be of some benefit
to farmers, especially in the manufacture
of farm machinery.
Also, the increase in and extension of
federal investment tax credits could be of
benefit to the agriculture community, but
Mr. Hannam said this wouldn't offset the
higher interest rates "we are paying now."
Can an agricultural
museum work in Perth?
Robert Carbert, general manager of the
Ontario Agriculture Museum in Milton,
was in Perth County recently to present
some tips on the art of operating a
museum.
Mr. Carbert said the question isn't
whether Perth County should have a
museum, but whether the museum can be
viable.
The museum manager was referring to
continuing discussions in Perth County
about the establishment of a museum with
artifacts from the Minnie Thomson
Memorial Museum serving as the core
collection.
The Thomson collection is composed
mostly of antique farm equipment and
vehicles. David Thomson, the museum's
owner, died last winter, leaving the future
of the 17,000 artifacts in the collection
uncertain.
When Mr. Carbert spoke to members of
the Perth County Municipal Association he
said a better spot for the museum than
Stratford couldn't be selected since it is
both the county seat and home of the
Stratford Festival.
But the museum manager cautioned that
to make any museum a success, it must be
determined beforehand what story the
museum would tell.
"You have to ask yourself if you want
another agricultural museum or a county
museum," he said.
A local county museum can link the past
with the future and demonstrate and
display local achivements.
Mr. Carbert said a public museum would
also have the benefit of being able to
receive artifacts donated from families in
the county.
