The Canada Plan Service provides detailed plans of modern farm buildings, livestock housing systems. storages. and equipment. Plans arc available to farmers, contractors. and other members of the agricultural industry. In the past year. 50 of the 500 plans available were converted from imperial to metric units, says Jim Arnold. Ontario Mnistry of Agriculture and Food agri- cultural engineer. Other metric plans will be available as existing plans arc revised. and as new plans are developed. "In the next three years.most of the popular plans will be available in metric units." says Mr. Arnold. "However. plans will be available in imperial units as long as the demand exists." "We are preparing for the day When WC will be dealing exclusively in metric units." he says. "The ready -mix concrete industry now uses metric units. and the lumber and steel industries will soon change." The whole series of trussed rafter plans. now available in imperial units. is in the, process of conversion to metric. New plans fa braced rafter (hip) roofs are available in both units. Canada Plan Service plans are designed by experts from provincial ministries of agriculture. in cooperation with the Canada Plan Service Design Centre. Agriculture Canada.• Ottawa. In Ontario. plans are available from agricultural engineers at local offices of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. In Canada, rats are perhaps less destructive than in many other coutries in the world but they still eat and contaminate vast amounts of food, destroy buildings and property and pose a disease threat. The rodents reproduce at a surprising rate. Rats may have up to six or seven litters a year, with a dozen or more young per litter.
