Saugeen Chippewa band
in beef business
The Chippewas of the Saugeen Indian
Reserve. northeast of the town of South-
ampton in Bruce County. have gone into
the beef business.
The band recently opened a beef
cow -calf operation on a 98 acre farm next to
the reserve. This project is only the second
of its kind to be attempted by Indians in
Canada. The only other beef operation is a
private enterprise operated by an Indian on
the Cape Croker Reserve.
The Saugeen project started when 18
beef cattle were acquired from the Indian
and northern affairs department's herd at
Cape Croker.
The beef were sheltered in Bruce County
Warden Gary Herron's barn for the winter.
The farm where the beef operation is
housed was bought by Band Chief James
Mason in the summer for $75,000 with a
$30,000 down payment and a 20 -year
rrortgage. The farm had to be purchased in
the chief's name since federal regulations
prevent band ownership.
The buildings on the farm were repaired
by members of the band and four young
men who will run the operation are living in
the farmhouse.
The men were trained under a federal
employment training program.
The herd consists of 20 cows, 19 calves
and a bull, all purebred Herefords.
The animals will be fed with grain and
hay grown on the reserve.
In his speech when the operation was
officially opened Chief Mason 'said the
band is committed to making the farm work
and hopes to start getting some return
within the next four or five years.
