The Rural Voice, 1978-10, Page 37The Young Farmer Togetherness in Bruce - 4-H dance workshops by Debbie Ranney "Togetherness" of north and south was one of the main reasons the 4-H council for Bruce county started dance workshops. Roy Pennington, president of the 4-H Leader's Council and a 4-H Club leader for four years for Bruce County explained that since Bruce County is such a long county the people in the 4-H Council thought they'd like to get 4-H members in the north involved with the ones from the south so they got the ones from the north to come down to a dance workshop which was held in Wiarton. They have since held workshops in Walkerton, Elma and Ripley. Usually when its up in Wiarton, the 4-H clubs take a bus which makes it a little easier for the ones from the south when they're interested in participating. This year a dance workshop is being held in conjunction with the Wiarton fall fair and according to Roy, "it's to try and create interest in the north end of the county. Maybe they'll become interested, become involved and come down to the south." He added that the purpose of the workshops is to bring 4-H clubs together. All kinds of dances are taught in these workshops including square dancing, waltzes, polkas and modern dancing. Mr. Pennington is the only instructor for the dance workshops. He explained how square dancing is taught. He said they take eight people who know something about it andget them to walk through the steps first of all and then have them try it once or twice with music. Then one of the couples who know how to do it. go in another set to help the ones who don't know how to do it. They go through the steps and by the time they get four or five sets they have almost everyone involved, according to Mr. Pennington. An average attendance at these workshops is between 40-50 people. "Once you get over that, it's hard to control to get them all square dancing." Some Teeswater Junior Farmers were up _dancing on Mr. Pennington's porch during the interview and Mr. Pennington explained that they had all been involved in the dance workshops and square dancing previously when they were in 4-H. They were now practising to go to the Western Fair in London. 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 Teeswater Junior Farmers Dance Ill= JINNI OM CATTLEMEN Try Our 35% Liquid Protein Supplement with Natural Protein We Can Supply •Lick Tanks Bulk Tanks Good Local Service MAKE THOSE DOLLARS GO FURTHER WITH L.P.S.
