The Rural Voice, 1978-10, Page 26Newman announces 1 7000 new jobs, marketing changes
Seven thousands full time jobs in Ontario
is enough to make anyone pick up their
ears and listen.
And they did, at the media day for the
International Plowing Match and
Machinery Show when Ontario
Agricultural Minister William Newman
announced new plans for his department.
Increased agricultural exports and a
ratinal tariff system could do much to
stimulate Ontario's economy and job
situation, Mr. Newman said. 7, 000 full
time jobs could be created if the
importation of types of processed fruit and
vegetables grown in Ontario were stopped
Although the import situation is a
federal matter, the agriculture minister
said the province can act on exports and its
own production.
To further these aims, he said he will be
leaving on a trade mission to Europe next
week and the agriculture ministry is
undergoing some major changes in its
structure in order to be more effective.
The ministry's marketing division will be
revamped. A food marketing development
branch will be established with two
primary functions: to develop and imple-
ment programs to increase consumption of
Ontario agricultural products domestically
and to expand the province's export of
food. As a result, all existing domestic
marketing programs will be consolidated
under the new branch and most of the
responsibilities of the Ontario Food Council
will be handed over to the new branch.
The act under which the Ontario Food
Council operates will be repealed and the
council's trade responsibilities will be
transferred to the ministry of consumer
and commercial relations.
The second major change will be
"streamline the farm products marketing
area". The farm products marketing board
and the Ontario Milk Commission will be
combined under one chairmanship. Staff of
the commission and the board will be
merged to form a single branch which will
provide administrative services to both
bodies.
The third change will be to amalgamate
the milk industry branch and the farm
products inspection branch into a quality
control branch. The new branch will be
moved to the marketing division "because
the quality of our food products is central to
..the best nen* around livestock today_"

our success in marketing them," Newman
said
He admitted there would be a little
confusion within the ministry. "The staff
have not been slotted yet but they won't
lose their jobs." He said ministry won't be
made any larger, just more effective.
He also told the crowd of 500 he would
be leaving Sept. 14 to carry the Food
Ontario banner to West Cermanv and
Britain, the European Economic Corn-
munity in Brussels and two countries in
Eastern Europe, Bulgaria and Hungary,
where he hopes to make inroads for the
export of Ontario agriculutral products.
'We already had preliminary discussions
with them and we're optimistic," he said.
Thg trade mission would be somewhat
similar to the one Newman took last year to
the Pacific Rim nations. That trip resulted
in extended markets in Japan, Taiwan and
Hong Kong.
The eastern European countries are
interested in buying purebred livestock.
Newman wouldn't expand on what type of
livestock but did mention mink. His visit to
Britain will be to discuss the export of
Ontario tobacco. He is also expected to
team up with the premier later in the
month in Europe.
