The Rural Voice, 1978-10, Page 15three regulations.
Merle Gunby, a member of the safety committee, said the
Federation has asked that farmers be exempt from regulations
except those requiring them to wear personal protective
equipment, rules about the shielding and guarding of farm
machinery and regulations about roll-over bars and seat belts on
tractors.
Under the personal protective equipment clause, farm
employers must make certain thei•1.employees wear hard hats,
safety glasses, protective foot wear, etc. when working.
Regulations . on shielding and guarding will require the
employer to make certain that guards are in place and in working
condition. Equipment built on the farm or manufactured locally
will also have to have the proper shields.
Also, the Canadian Standards Association is presently
finalizing standards for roll -protection on agricultural tractors
and it will be up to each provincial government to decide whether
this will be included in their own legislation, such as Bill 70.
Merle Gunby said the safety committee of the Federation has
one more meeting before making their final recommendations.
If Bill 70 is passed, farm safety will be governed by some of the
same regulatiosn in effect for other industries in the province.
Until the farming community becomes •more conscious of
safety in the agricultural workplace, '33 farm workers or farm
children will continue to lose their lives annually in Ontario.
