Editor's Note: The following letter was
reprinted from an American newspaper
and sent to the U.S. Secretary of
Agriculture.
Dear Mr. Secretary:
I have a farmer friend who received a
$1,200 cheque from the government for not
raising hogs. So, I have decided to go into
the Not -Raising -Hogs business.
What I want to know is, what is the best
kind of hogs not to raise and what is the
best kind of land not to raise hogs on? I
would prefer not to raise razor backs, but if
they are not the best kind not to raise, I will
be happy not to raise some other kind. My
friend says he prefers not to raise Poland
Minas.
The hardest part of this business is going
tobe keeping an individual record on each
of the hogs I do not raise. Do you have any
suggestions as to how to do this?
My friend has been raising hogs for over
25 years and the most he ever made was
$530, until this year when he received
$1,200 for not raising hogs. Now, if I get
$1,200 for not raising 50 hogs, I should get
2,400 for not raising 100 hogs, etc.
1 would like to start off on a small scale,
holding myself down to not raising 5.000
hogs for which I will receive $120.000.
Also, I figure these hogs which I will not
raise will not eat 150,00 bushels of corn. 1
understand you pay us farmers for not
raising corn. How much will you pay me for
not raising 150,000 bushels of corn which 1
will not feed to the hogs whicf I am not
going to raise.
1 want to get started as soon as possible,
but I don't know if this is the best time of
year for not raising hogs. Please let me
know the best time of year to get started.
Sincerely,
1.A. Farmer
