The Rural Voice, 1978-08, Page 24Agriculture Minister Jim Hewitt said in
Yorkton, Saskatchewan that turkey and
egg boards in B.C. would withdraw from
national marketing plans to voice their
concerns about allocation of production
quota subsidies.
"The minister knows that we are
unhappy with the way the national boards
arrive at the quota allotments but we have
no intention of withdrawing at this time,"
Blair said.
Colin Welsh, manager of the B.C.
Turkey"Marketing Board said the national
agency has told the province it can only
produce 16.4 million pounds of turkey meat
this year, although B.C. Growers produced
and sold 20.1 million pounds last year.
Put farmers before
banks: Hannam
Peter Hannam, president of the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture (OFA) believes
that all farmers should have a priority of
claim against the assets of processors who
have declared bankruptcy --before any
claims by banks.
"It's about time the government stopped
discriminating against livestock and
poultry producers and included them in the
proposed legislation," Mr. Hannam said
recently.
Under the proposed act, Bill C-57,
section 177, only the producers of diary
products and direct products of the soil,
such as grains, fruits and vegetables are
given priority status.
"We've 'been trying, for years to obtain
expanded coverage." added Mr. Hannam.
"1 simply cannot understand why this
discrimination against other producers
should be continued. All farm products
should be included without exception.
simply because all producers are vulner-
able."
Mr. Hannam said that the OFA recom-
mended that the ceiling for the amount of
money provided should be S25.000 and not
the proposed $14.000. He added that the
proposed formula to be used to determine
the amount a producer gets is "quite
unsatisfactory" because it is subject to
change if the base year is changed.

of the Carter administration that farmers
not work part of their cropland this year in
order to qualify for federal price supports
on wheat, corn and other feed grains. The
order was issued because of a rise in
pride --depressing grain surpluses.
Farmers last year produced a record corn
harvest of 6.37 billion bushels which
helped balloon stockpiles and led to this
years set-aside acreage program.
Seed companies want
to do their own tests
Seed companies who sell to farmers won
unanimous approval for a resolution that
crop test data they collect be accepted by
the federal government in licensing
desisions at a meeting held in London
recently.
John Stewart of Ailso Craig president of
the Canadian Seed Trade Association,
hailed adoption of the resolution as "a
major advance."
The companies want the right to submit
data from their own test plots and to
develop their own co-operative system
among private plant -breeding companies
when applying for a licence to sell farmers
a new seed variety. Currently. testing
takes place at university and federal
government plots. •
Now five plant breeders from private
companies and wheat pools will meet with
government officials to discuss the con-
cept.
