The Rural Voice, 1978-08, Page 8Ray Lowes. of Hamilton one of the original members of the
Bruce Trail Authority, said the authority has lost about 26 miles
d the trail through the Blue Mountains, three miles of the trail
have had to be re-routed in Sydenham Township and other
pieces of the trail have been re-routed.
Mr. Lowes said the farmers have withdrawn their property as
a backlash against the NEC - "They (the farmers) held us to
ransom for that reason."
Mr. Lowes said his organization hopes the problems with the
trail will be a temporary situation and that some landowners
said if the Trail Authority came out against the NEC then they
would allow the trail back on their land.
Although Mr. Lowe said there were some problems with litter
left by hikers on the trial, "we (the authority) heard very little
about the problems until people needed a reason to throw the
trail off their property."
Mr Lowes said the authority. with 10,000 members, is an
educational as well as htktng club.
The association spokesman said the authority emphasizes that
hikers must pick up after themselves and the people who have
walked the trail before them.
He said the authority feels the preservation of natural areas and
agriculture are very compatible uses.
Compatible
Mr. Lowes said the trails people are compatible with farming
but not with industry and the subdivisions which threaten the
trail.
The problems created by individual hikers on the trail might
have been solved by discussions between the Bruce Trail
Authority and individual landowners.
However, the NEC and Bill 129 have created problems which
are increasing rather than solving the ill feeling between
recreationalists and farmers.
As the Artemsia Federation of Agriculture said in their recent
brief, "The Bruce Trail earlier met with great success in its
endeavours because of private agreements with landowners. The
heavy-handed proposals by the Niagara Escaprment Commis-
sion have jeopardized this success. We support the return to
private negotiation and oppose the move towards greater
govern 'mental and bureacratic control as embodied in the
Niagara Escarpment Commission and in its proposals."
