"Tho female moth is flightless. It lays its
eggs in clusters on any solid surface. These
dusters can be recognized by their
uwcring of fine buff hairs from the
female's abdomen.
"The larva. after hatching. climbs
available objects and spins out a
continuous line of silk which floats on the
h•eczc. When the silk becomes long
enough. it acts as a 'balloon' to lift the
larva. The caterpillar then floats on the
wind until it Iands,on some vegetation and
Mats to feed." Mr. Schmidt says.
If the eggs are deposited on camping
equipment or cars of visitors to an infested
arca when the campers return home to a
previously uninfested arca the eggs go
with them. They hatch into ravenous
larvae.
Campers in infested areas should check
their cars and equipment for egg clusters
before leaving a park. Sheltered spots such
as the undersides of vehicles. fenders or
behind bumpers should be carefully
inspected. If any egg clusters arc found.
they should be removed and burned.
Last year. the United States Department
of Agriculture spent about $2.5 million on
research into gypsy moth control.
In Canada. a control program and
precautions in moving materials out of
infested areas have helped to confine the

pest from spreading further.
B. E. Hopper of Agriculture Canada's
plant quarantine division says the
emphasis is on minimizing the long-
distance spread of the moth.
"When infestations in campgrounds
build up to high levels. the insects arc
sprayed with a chemical growth regulator
that effectively eliminates them without
danger to animals. fish or birds.
"In order to control spread. the navies of
campers visiting parks in the infested areas
arc recorded. Later when the campers
return home to uninfested areas. their
equipment is checked for egg clusters by
department officials." Mr. Hopper says.
The plant quarantine division conducts a
regular detection survey, to keep track of
any new infestations.
The Canadian Forestry Service. in the
fall of 1976. began a program to introduce
parasites of the gypsy moth eggs into an
infested arca near Kingston. Ontario. The
program will be continued this year with
the introduction of a second parasite to
help control gypsy moths in the area.
"The United States Department of
Agriculture is working on another
biological control agent that may one da
be of use in Canada." Mr. Hopper says.
"U.S. scientists are mass-producing a
natural virus that occurs in populations of
the gypsy moth. The virus kills the
caterpillars but has no effect on any other
life forms."
If it proves successful in the U.S. the
virus will be checked to see if it is safe and
useful under Canadian conditions.
