The Rural Voice, 1978-07, Page 31Shopping for nutrition booklet is free In response to the demand for more information on food shopping and nutrition, Agriculture Canada and Health & Welfare Canada have cooperated in the production of a new booklet "Shopping for Food and Nutrition" that has recently been released. "It is becoming more and more evident that, from the standpoint of economy and health. consumers must buy wisely so that they get the most value for their money", states Lois Hurst, Director of Food Advisory Division, Agriculture Canada. "Shopping for Food and Nutrition" is a colorful 32 -page booklet that explains how to obtain the nutrients required for good health by following Canada's Food Guide. It takes the consumers through the grocery store and advises on selection of products for nutritive value and economy. It interprets the information on the labels and includes a guide to storing food in the home. Watch for insect hitchhikers The next time you camp in southern Quebec. eastern Ontario or the north- eastern United States. watch out for a hitch -hiker that could spell destruction to forest regions of eastern Canada. The unwanted hitch -hiker is the egg of gypsy moth, a pest introduced from Europe that has already infested about 1.6 million acres of forest and residential areas in the northeastern• United States. It has crossed the St. Lawrence River and is now spreading in Canada. Infested areas are in southeastern Ontario and southwestern Quebec. The gypsy moth caterpillar can do as much damage to trees as the better-known forest tent caterpillar but it is potentially a greater threat because it feeds on the leaves of a greater variety of trees. "The gypsy moth larvae prefer oak, but when hungry will eat just about anything with leaves on it," says Al Schmidt, an entomologist with Agriculture Canada's plant quarantine division. "It is this ability to adapt to the available. food supplyas well as their incredible, reproduction potential, that makes them so dangerous."
