The Grey Bruce Motion on the Niagara Escarpment presented at
the Toronto Directors meeting was referred to committee.
The Bruce County Federation' has assembled a large agricultural
statistics file. If any members require these statistics for -speeches or
briefs contact Harold Poechman 364-2374 or Albert Simpson
881-2298.
We will be reporting on the extent of these statistics in future
issues.
PROFILE -HAROLD POECHMAN
Harold Poechman is the second vice-president of the Bruce County
Federation of Agriculture. He farms 450 acres in Brant Township.
He has a mixed farm with eggs, hogs and cash crop. He also
operates a large custom operation. Harold bought his home farm in
1954 and two years later married Mary Zettler. He started doing
custom swathing and combining in 1959 and this work has expanded
with his, farm.
Harold is active in the local egg producers association. He is on the
board of governors for Sacred Heart School and is past Grand Knight
of the Hanover Knights of Columbus. He is Director for the Bruce
County Pork Producers and started the South Brant Buyers Club.
The buyers club now has 40 members who group together to save on
purchasing.
Harold has found agriculture very fulfilling. He feels a young man
can start into farming to -day but "He has to put his mind to it".
Contrary to the thoughts of many young farmers Harold believes
quota aid the young farmers. He is a supporter of marketing boards
and firmly endorses the O.F.A. corn marketing proposal.
As his sons move into the farming operation Harold looks forward
to phasing out. Gerry (the oldest son) has finished a course on farm
management at Centralia College and has joined his father on the
farm. His younger brother Wayne is enthusiastically following the
same route.
