Local counties far down
1
the line on farm injuries
Local counties were well down the list of
counties reporting time -loss, farm -related
injuries in 1977.
Huron county with a total of 29 farm
injuries was 18th on the list followed by
Perth with 28. Bruce was four placing
behind with only 16 accidents.
Leading the list were counties where-
heavy
hereheavy labour content farming takes place
such as tobacco, fruit and vegetable
operations. 309 or 14.9 of the total of 2078
lost -time accidents in the province took
place on farms in the Haldiman-Norfolk
area, the Farm Safety Association of
Ontario said. York region was second with
275 accidents with Middlesex third with
137 accidents.
Top injury totals came in landscaping
and horticulture, largely because of the
large number of unskilled labourers
involved. Tobacco farms accounted for the
second highest total while third was fruit
and vegetable industries.
The dairy industry accounted for nearly
10 percent of the total lost -time injuries.
Falls and equipment -related accidents
were the main causes for the 203 reported
injuries.
Injuries in other commodities by
percentage were: greenhouse, 5.5; beef,
5.4; poultry. 4.8; mushroom, 3.8; horses,
3.2; drainage. 1.9; pork, 1.4; cash crop, 1;
other. 5.1 and commodity unknown, .7.
The 1977 farm injury statistics were
compiled by the Farm Safety Association of
Ontario in cooperation with the Workmen's
Compensation Board of Ontario.
