should ask Murray and Jack to bring with them a couple of MPPs
from urban ridings so they could gain an insight into the farming
industry.
An immediate problem for area farmcrs is the difference in the
price of gasoline purchased at a service station and gasoline
delivered to the farm tank. The difference is great enough that some
farmers are fitting 200 gallon tanks on their pick-up trucks so they
can drive into town and buy gas at the lower price and then truck it
back to their farm. All agreed that this is a very unsafe practice, but
nobody could blame the farmers for trying to save money in this way.
One Federation brief asked the MPPs to press the government and
manufacturers of farm machinery for:
(1) More standardization of parts to redur:: costs.
(2) A warranty system based on hours of use.
(3) More adequate research on design and engineering.
One brief expressed the farmers' concern about the two-day
National Food Conference to be held in Ottawa on February 22 and
23 to develop a National Food Policy which most farmers believe will
just be a continuation of Canada's Cheap Food Policy. One reason for
this concern is that out of 400 delegates to this Conference only 40, or
about 10 per cent will be actual food producers. The Federation feels
that the idea of a single National Food Policy to cover the
complexities of farming, food processing, transportation, marketing
and retailing is a simplistic approach. This type of policy would
require long study and superlative wisdom before it could possible
be effective.
HURON COUNTY FEDERATION MEMBERSHIP MEETING
O.M.A.F. BOARD ROOM, CLINTON FEB. 2, 1978.
BY SHEILA GUNBY
Huron County farmers plan to take part in a counter meeting to the
National Food Strategy Conference that is to be held in Ottawa, Feb.
22 and 23. At the National Conference, the agricultural industry will
only be represented by 40 people out of a total of 400 attending. The
Federation of Agriculture is dissatisfied with the poor representation
of the agricultural community at this meeting.
The Counter Meeting will be held Feb. 22 at the Chateau Laurier
in Ottawa. Gordon Hill will be the chairman and Peter Hannam will
be the guest speaker. Trudeau has been invited to attend.
John Hazlitt spoke briefly to the monthly meeting to explain the
Corn Marketing Proposal Petition and encouraged farmers to get
their signatures on it.
The Consumer Liason Committee presented four resolutions that
were passed at the meeting. One was that a weighing factor be used
in the calculation of the Consumer Price Index. It is assumed that
Canadians spend 27 per cent of their income on food purchases but
in reality, the figures vary from 13.8 per cent to 16 per cent. This
distortion leads to inflation.
The Federation of Agriculture resolved that domestic and
imported foods be reported separately in the Consumer Price Index.
Too often the high cost of imported goods forces up the Consumer
Price Index beyond what is in demand.
Members decided to form a roster of speakers with appropriate
training for public speaking and radio and TV interviews on
consumer concerns.
It was also decided that the Huron Federation of Agriculture
sponsor a Media Bus Tour of various farms in Turnberry Township.
The Consumer Liason Committee and the Public Relations
Committee will organize this tour so that the media can be aware of
what is going on on the farms. CONTINUED ON PAGE 29
