Corn acreage growth
predicted
Corn acreage in Ontario could reach two
million acres by 1980, G.A. Fisher, Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and Food econom-
ist in Chatham predicted.
Mr. Fisher said that if the present trend
continues, the acreage will reach that mark
by 1980. He pointed out that in the past
five years acreage has increased 37 per
cent to reach a record total of 1.6 million
acres last year. That acreage produced the
third record crop in a row, 154 million
bushels at a record average has also
increased by 24 per cent from 700,000
acres in 1973 to 865,000 acres in 1977.
Mr. Fisher predicted a continuing trend
to switch from oats, barley, mixed grains,
hay and improve pasture to corn
production. In the southern and western
part of the province, however, soybean
production will provide competition for
acreage in 1978. He said he expects prices
for seed corn will remain about the same
this year as last with strong demand for
some of the promising early hybrid
varieties this year.
Increases in the cost of chemical sprays
can be expected, Mr. Fisher said, but
adequate supplies of nitrogen fertilizer
supplies should result in strong price
competition. Phosphate and potash fertiliz-
ers should remain at fall levels. In light of
prospective crop prices and yield respons-
es, he said, farmers should be careful in
assessing fertilizer requirements.
Increasing energy costs will encourage
producers to consider changes such as
minimum tillage. improved chemical weed
controls, low -heat grain drying and short
season, high yielding varieties. He
predicted that corn cribs may make a come
back in Ontario.
