The Lucknow Sentinel, 1989-10-04, Page 3P.� Charles and Ruby McDonald of Goderich, former residents of Lueknow, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last Saturday. A family dinner was held followed by an open house at the Legion. (Pat Livingston photo) McDonalds mark their 5Oth Charlie McDonald and Ruby Reid were married on September .30, 1939 in the Lucknow United Church manse, by Reverend R. Collin Todd. The attendants :were Doris (Reid) Humphrey aiii Nor McDolitdd. Charlie and 'Ruby .:farmed at St. Helen's -for 29 years then moved to Lucknow and Charlie was employed at Wingliam and District Hospital. After living in Lucknow for 18 years they retired to Goderich in 1987. They have three children, Joyce Cranston of Wingham; Gladys Fryfogle of Point Clark and Allan of St. Helen's; eight grandchildren =and. one great granddaughter. Relatives and friends gathered at the Lucknow -Legion on Sep a 0 30 to ex- tend atend their best wishes. Congratulations! Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, October 4, 1989—Page 3 Special opening hid for Thames Valley Children's Centre Thames Valley Children's Centre celebrated the new opening of its building at 779 Base Line Road East on Friday, September 15. Attending the ceremony in the playground was the Honourable David Peterson, Premier of Ontario; Deputy Mayor Jack Burghardt, the Honourable Tom Hockin, MP London west (Federall Minister of State for Small Business and Tourism) and more than 400 children and friends of the Centre. The Honourable, David Peterson, Premier of Ontario commented on the state-of-the-art facility and its impact as a rehabilitation centre in Ontario. He said "Through the efforts of all those who con- tributed towards the establishment of this new Centre, it is gratifying to know that this special group of young people will have the opportunity to achieve their goals for a better quality of life." Premier Peterson then cut the cake and gave a piece to Franklin Nother, 10 years old, and Chesley Walters, 5 years old, who both attend the school at the Centre. Balloons were released which added to the jubilant mood in the playground. Ken Crivea, 9 years old, presented an original piece of his art to Premier Peterson. Using his touch talker, Ken welcomed everyone to the Centre and in- vited them to tour the facility. Tom Mitchell, Chairman of the Board of Directors, said "Today is a momentous occasion. The new environment will give each disabled child and young adult the opportunity to attain the highest quality of life by helping them reach optimal in- dependence, self-respect and participation in society." He added "We are grateful and thankful to our friends. As a result of your encouragement, support and com- mitment we are close to our capital cam- paign goal of $1.5 million and we hope to complete the campaign in the next few months. However, our needs are ongoing. offer to ..better meet the meds of, our ey ilitten, we must lake newteelmelogy, new techniques and develop new pro- grams." In the new building, the child -oriented ground floor houses a wheelchair playroom, a multi-purpose gyre and therapeutic pool. The second level features a medical clinic, a lounge for parents to relax between treatment ses- sions, administrative offices as well as the Easter Seals' offices. There will also be a centralized resource library, a gait laboratory to help disabled children walk, and an apartment to help adolescents cope with the activities of daily living. For over 40 years, thousands of children have had their lives enhanced by the Centre's unique programs and special care. The move to the Westminster Cam- pus allows integration and interaction with other specialized medical facilities. 90th birthday celebration Mrs. Viola Irwin recently celebrated her 90th birthday, with a family dinner held in her honour, at the home of her daughter, Ruth Hastings. Born on September 11, 1899 the former Viola Jamieson is a daughter of the late John Jamieson and Isabella Gaunt. She and her husband, Roy, farmed in West Wawanosh Township before retiring to Lucknow in 1968. Mrs. Irwin has a fami- ly of four daughters and one son, Louise Conley of Edmonton; Juanita Hopper of Wingham; Dorene Finlay of Belmore; Orland of Wingham and Ruth Hastings of Morrie Township, with whom she is cur- rently residing. Happy birthday Mrs. Irwin.
