Car owners, ',riven' to ban uptcy
The Issue has been discussed, anaiized and literally studied to
death but still no auction leas been taken. The Issue is car insurance
and -the action to be taken fias to come from Premier bavid
Peterson.
As any young person "knows. insuring a driver under the age of
25 takes more than a glove compartment full of S100 •bills yet still
the insurance companies complain -they are losing money. It's a valid
-.complaint ..for they are in business afteratl.
Aside the the massive ,costs of insuring a young driver, lawsuits
dealing with tar .accidents tie up our courts and :end up costing so-
meone a lot Of cash.
is there a solution?
One possible alternative- to our currant ;system ref • insurance in On-
tario is arra-fault 'insurance. Such a ;plan :doesn't -ford an'accident :vic-
tim
viatim to go to court to 'seek compensation hence less money is spent
by the insurer.. This should mean .lower •premiums for everyone.
in the 1987 aeleetion campaign, David Peterson promised us very
specific plan to lower insutance rates" • in this province. To date, no
such plan has been Implemented and it is the young drivers in On-
tario who are paying the price.
There are at least 171 private insurance .companies in Ontario and
each one claims to lose money on auto policies, but is simply rais-
ing premium or :being more chosey about customers =going to solve
the problem. Of course not.
Ontario drivers :aro over a barrel. They •are required by law to
have auto 'insurance and aroforced, under the :present prafitbased
system, 4o pay through -the nose %to ,get it..A no-fault. -public system
Of insurance, ane )not based! :on profit, is rapidly 'becoming a
necessity.'
'Other :provinces in Zane*. operate. under such a system and the
•resdit is :.lower ;premiums, and less time and money spent in the
overcrowded :courts:

J.aDb1er's back
Yes folks - I'm back, after two weeks
of a4R and R". All year I look forward to
holidays and when they finally arrive it
takes me the first week
1►yto forget about
,the office. the'seeond week I start
to relax and enjoy the time off and then
it's time to return.
Bet . you're wondering if Mr. Fixit
assisted with any wallpapering this year.
In order to keep our wonderful marriage
intact, we decided not to wallpaper. I did
however catch up on a few loathsome
chores around the house. You know - the
ones we all put off until we are shamed
into them! My oven looked like it was
ready for where ever one sends abused
ovens. Those wonderful oven cleaning
products advertised on the `tube tube
should have been tested by me. There is
no way they coultelaim they work in 29
minutes!
After contorting my body into all
shapes to clean off the remains sof As,
1 decided to take on the Friday. MI to
my surprise there was no fuzzy little
things .growing in any containers.
I figured I was on a roll so next I at
tacked the floor with a scrub mop and
gave it a good waxing. You can tell so
far that my liolidays were really a blast.
Having accomplished all the above
chores in one day, I decided I Eked work-
ing
orking better. It may stretch my grey mat-
ter to its limits, but at least it doesn't in-
volve physical labour.
I did get away for four days. Having
y BihurRIver, we travelled with
my parents for a visit. It took 11 hours
to get, there. This arduous trip proved to
me I would never make a truck driver!
I am not a -lover of water or boats - no
matter what size they are, and I was not
looking forward to the ferry crossing. The
last time we had crossed on the Chi-
Cheemaun, I never got off my seat ex-
cept to visit the lavatory. I made sure I
took those pills.that are supposed to calm

a queasy tummy. Just my luck, the ferry
we hoped to cross on was booked solid
and we had to wait a further two hours
and take the new ferry, Nindawayma,
which loosely translated I believe means
something akin to little sister. The cross-
ing was very smooth and I only panick-
ed when I noticed to the starboard side
all I could see was water and to the port
side all I co held see was sky. I looked
straight ahead until my mother informed
me that whatever the captain was doing
he had stopped and both sides were now
equal. The sea gulls kept us entertained.
They love tourists and do not hesitate to
take advantage of any free food being
thrown their way.
Blind River is quite a tourist area, be-
ing located on the North Channel and a
good number of Americans dock their
vessels there. I was quite content to
wander around the dock admiring them
while they men "went to sea" in small
motor boat and toured the islands.
One thing Blind River has that .is big-
ger than any others I have seen is mos-
quitoes! They are the size of our flies
and love blood with a passion. Once the
sun went down, they came out and we
humans headed indoors. Even OFF is no
deterrent to these guys.
I also managed to read a book from
front to back cover during my holidays.
Chum aur . °d -reader, I-have-ov
few years, for some reason, succumbed
to reading newspapers only.
Not exciting holidays, but it was a
chance to put the brain in neutral for a
short period of time.
As Monday loomed on the horizon I
started wondering if I would remember
my darkroom training and how to use
Mr. IBM. i had no need to fear, the grey
