Karl Hilzinger, CHAMP Sports Consultant.
War Amps dedicates new film
The War Amputations of Canada has
just released Nakiska Plus One, a follow-
up to time popular Nakiska bids film releas-
ed in conjunction with the 1988 Winter
Olympics. It is dedicated to the memory of
War Amps Sports Consultant Karl Hilz-
inger, who died last December just before
the film was completed.
The new film features scenes of this
remarkable athlete and amputee coaching
members of The War Amps Child Amputee
( CHAMP) Program. Hilzinger's unique
skiing style is also highlighted, as well as
that of The War Amps Chief Executive
Cliff Chadderton. Chadderton, in his 60s.
was inspired to take up skiing by the
former Sports Consultant.
The film's breathtaking backdrops are
provided by Mount Allan at'Nakiska, site
- of the Olympic Alpine events, and by
Kananaskis Country in Alberta.
Nakiska Plus One shows how three
Champs, Stephen Nagy of Calgary, Chris
Koch of Nanton, Alberta and Samson
Gagnon of Chicoutimi, Quebec, have pro-
gressed into capable skiers despite their
amputations. Chris, who .is a quadruple
amputee, displays his special technique of
getting both up and down the ski hills.
Nakiskaa-Plus One--atso _an. inspiration
for seniors. Chadderton, who suffered the
loss of his right foot and other injuries in
World War II, shows how the adaptations
made to his ski equipment and artificial
leg allows him to ski.
"Forget your age," says Chadderton.
"It's what you do with the years you have
left that counts."
Nakiska Pius One is a half hour long and
is available in various formats, on a rental
free basis to the public. To borrow the film
to The War Amps, 2827 Riverside
Dr., Ottawa, Ontario KIV 0C4.
Souvenir copies are available for a srnalj
donation, the proceeds of which will be us-
ed to establish a ski bursary for Champs in
Hilzinger's name. 'The French version,
Nakiska, Nous Revoila ! , is in production
and will be available to the public in the
near future.
All War Amps productions are financed
through corporate donations and are loan-
ed free of charge to the public.
