What a week for Ripley residents, three
times they ,heard the wail of the firetruck,
the oneon Thursdayturned outto bea small
fire started by a heating lamp which was
easily put under control. The second fire
Friday around 5:30 p.m. was a much larger
problem being a barn and other buildings
and requid both Ripley and Luclmow to
bring under control, evenvdththeirciffortsa
large amount of livestock was lost by John
McIntosh of RR 3 Luclmow out on °Highway
86.
Then there was The one on Saturday, was
this another fire, no! this was .another
Ripley team being honoured by the village
in traditional style. The Ripley Midgets had
won the local Lions Tournament, by
defeating Drayton in the final .after beating
Wingham 4-1 and Zurich '6-1 in earlier
games. The consolation final was won by
Lucan who beat Wingham 7-4.
There isnova3ito describe with words the
atmosphere in the Ripley -Huron arena as
the final game .started, Ripley in green,
Drayton in orange and an obviously par-
tisan crowd of spectators. After the first
period the score was 04 and tension began
to build, after the 2nd period the score was
• still 0-0 and by now the crowd was yelling
an ,screititlingforTgOd y chances-a-nd
groaning when Drayton was on the
offensive.
Just past the halfway point in the third
period Steve Twolan scored a power play
goal to put Ripley up 1-0 and only a spec-
tacular save by the _Drayton netminder
ininutestlater keptit that way. With 2:351eft
in the game Chris Lowry scored to give
Ripley a .2.0 lead ,and the crowd went
banmias,ineincludedpen,paper, cigarettes
and 'lighter in the excitement, even when
Ripley took a twominute penalty .at.2:03 to
go we knew that we were the winners. The
noise generated by the crowd at the final
buzzer have pit Maple Leaf Gardens

It 'but as far as we were concerned standing
ifin the 'bleachers the whole team could have
won one.
Gail Coiling of Ripley won the 5040 draw
of $156 but the biggest 'winners were those
peoplewho turned outtocheer on the Ripley
team in that final game, congratulations to
the Lions for an excellent tournament, and a
terrific roast Web:limier that at $6 had to be
the best buy of the day.
In lag weeks advertisement con-
gratulating the Armstrong 'Construction
Juveniles, two players =llama& were not
mentioned.
Darren Cook and ToddVarrell took part in
the Silver Stiek victory as team members.
Eddie Moore who coaches the team was left
out.also.
An apology goes out to these players and
coach for missing them. Congratulations
goes out to them as well.
