sures that there is a good ratio of new
board members to those who have return -
(ed. Elections by acclamation should not be
e rule. The nominating committee has
the resp. isibility to ensure that the names
of all members who wish to stand for each
vacant position are considered by the
organization during elections.
The first step is to find a number of can-
didates for the position. Throughout the
year, names of potential individuals
should be collected and interest instilled in
them for serving on the board. Secondly,
each nominee should be contacted to notify
him/her of the nomination. This is an ex-
cellent time to review the goals of the
organization, explain the responsibilities
of the position to the nominee and answer
questions about the job. A job description
is an excellent tool for clarifying the com-
mitment required. After the discussion,
ask the nominee if he/she will stand for
election.
The nominating committee has a very
important mandate. It should be a working
committee for the entire year to ensure a
good slate of offices to be voted on at your
annual meeting.

New plan for
grain grower
A new income stabilization plan for On-
tario's grain growers will be introduced,
Agriculture and Food Minister Jack Rid-
dell announced October. 14.
Riddell has asked the Ontario Farm In-
come Stabilization Commission to develop
a plan for the 1988-90 crop years, in con-
sultation ,with the affected commodity
organizations.
The commission has recommended that
a simplified three-year grains plan be
developed because discussions wi the
federal government on tripartite s iliza-
tion for, grain crops have not proc ed as
quickly as expected.
The new grains plan will replace the
plan for the 1985-87 grain crops. It will be
developed under the authority of the On-
tario Farm Income Stabilization Act.
Under this act, if the market price of grain
falls below a calculated support price, pay-
ment is made to the farmer.
The support price is calculated by using
95 per cent of the previous five-year
average price, with an adjustment made
for cash costs. The provincial government
makes two-thirds of the payment.
The Farm Income Stabilization Com-
mission will develop details of the new
plan. Further information will be made
available to producers later this year.
