LUCKNOW DISTRICT CO.OPERATIVE County Rd. 1 Lucknow 519-7953 New direction — Huron County Planning Challenges and Opportunities In the spring of 1987, the document entitl- ed Challenges and Opportunities, was in- troduced by the Minister of Community and Social Services. This document pro- mised to have a great impact on the lives of all people who have been labelled as Developmentally Handicapped. It called for the closure of institutions, the reduc- tion of sheltered workshop placements, and placed a wholehearted emphasis on Community Integration for people who have been labelled. This document clearly indicated that all alternatives would be ex- plored and developed clearly indicated that all alternatives would be explored and developed to support labelled people and stated that institutionalization of children would be an option of the last resort. Presently, approximately $31 million per year come into Huron County to pro- vide services to people who have been labelled as Developmentally Handicap- ped. These funds are primarily ad- ministered by the three local Associations for Community Living (formerly associa- tions for the Mentally Handicapped). They are used to provide services ranging from in-home support for labelled children to fully integrated supported employment. To conform with the philosophy of Challenges and Opportunities, the Ministry of Community and Social Ser- vices has directed that county wide Plann- ing Committees be formed. The Planning Committees will be charged with the task of priorizing the allocation of funds coming into the county to provide services for labelled people. In particular, this group will be concerned with seeing that any new programs developed in Huron County ad- dress needs which have been identified as a concern by the whole area. To allow this committee to accurately reflect the concerns of labelled people in the county it must be consumer driven and its membership must include . consumers and families of consumers. this twelve person committee will be comprised of one Board Member from each of the Com- munity Living Associations, one represen- tative from each of the county's three Peo- ple First Groups, and the three executive directors of the associations for Communi- ty Living. A priority now is to find representation from the parents of labell- ed people from each of three areas in the county. To this end, meetings will be held in Ex- eter, Goderich and Wingham for parents to meet, air their concerns, and appoint a representative from each area to sit on the Planning Committee. Notification of the meeting times and locations appears in this and other local newspapers. A contact number for each area is provided and parents of labelled people are urged to become involved. In the Wingham area, interested parents should call Rita Rice Bowers, at the Wingham and District Community Living Association office at 357-362. A parents' meeting will then be set up in the Wingham area to discuss the county planning for- mat, and to elect a parent representative from the Wingham area to sit on this committee. Dear editor, The ability of David Sommerville, Presi- dent of the National Citizens' 'Coalition, leaves much to be desired. On one hand, he places large ads in newspapers to tell voters where Ed Broad- bent, NDP leader, stands on four issues. On the other, he writes to the editors of the same newspapers explaining what he meant to say in the first place. Any intelligent person reading these ads would dismiss them, as shallow and ambiguous. Misleading people must be a pastime with Mr. Sommerville. First his organiza- tion luresmembers and their money in on the premise that the group is non partisan, then it attacks the most popular political leader in the country because of his integrity. He claims that defeating Ed Broadbent in his own riding would be "a blow for freedom." A blow for freedom, in what respect may I ask? Ed Broadbent's' re-election or defeat rests on his merit and the voters will decide; that's freedom. But if he should lose his seat because of a $500,000 campaign against him; now that's scary ! Adrian Zanchetta, Vice -President, Port Elgin, Bruce, NDP Dear editor, Hundreds of little Canadian children are registered for French upmersion classes to receive French language concepts for the rest of their lives. Young mothers and The TOWNSHIP OF ASHFIELD HEREBY DECLARES The last week of October as "Crime Stoppers Week" in support of Crime Stoppers of Huron County "Help make this Hallowe'en a safe and happy one." T'0 THE EDITOR fathers would show great love for their children if they took the time to read research done on this subject and not listen so intently to the educational system in our country that is very French oriented. It is becoming common knowledge that early French immersion distorts good English grammar. Isn't it better to be ex- cellent in the English language because it is foremost in learned and spoken languages in the world? The' French language is thirteenth on the scale of spoken languages. Would you dare to limit the possibilities for your child's future? Who are they going to converse with? Each other? Quebec (who resents the English language)? Or France? The rest of the world knows English! Consider the possibility that the French intend to "take over" Canada. Would you be contributing to a usurpment of 'power and authority if you allow your young child to enter French immersion classes too early? The decision is yours, young mothers and fathers. The majority of Canada want to trust that you will make a wise decision for you child's sake and the future of Canada. Contact is Box 22223, Barrie, On- tario, L4M 5R3. Respectfully, Vona R.
