Big Brothers needed everywhere there
BY SHELLEY MCPHEE HAIST
September is Big Brothers Month, a
time when special promotion of the Big
Brothers Association receives extra
attention.
Still, the Big Brother movement, like
any community program, is not one which
can be solely given attention for 30 days of
the year. The Big Brother organization
needs support 365 days in the year.
Renewed support and commitment is
helping to make the North Huron Big
Brothers Association a bigger and better
organization.
Locally Big Brothers began in Goderich
some 10 years ago. Now the association is
on the grow, with expansions being made
into CliMton, Seaforth, Lucknow and
Wingham.
The recharged Big Brothers association
comes after a reorganizing of the board of
directors and a renewed sense of support
and volunteer help.
President Ralph Smith of Bayfield
noted, "We have re-established the board
after a lapse of time. Now we have more
work being done by committees and we
have more people helping out."
Mr. Smith is excited about the new sense
of spirit in the Big Brothers group, con-
sidering that one year ago the local
association had reached the point where
the possibility of folding was nearly a
reality.
"Catherine Soddy of Goderich held the
group together for a,year or two when no
one else. was available," Mr. Smith noted.
Today the North Huron Big Brothers
Association is backed by a board of 14 peo-
ple, including representatives from
various points in the county. These people
are working to help set-up Big Brother con-
nections in their communities. Clinton's
representative on the board is Rev. Jim
Bechtel.
In Goderich there are currently seven
Big Brother and. Little Brother matches,
but there is room for expansion.
The need for the Big Brother program is
clearly evident, said Mr. Smith. The
former public school principal noted that
there are many young boys who could
benefit from the Big Brother program.
"The hardest part is to get Big Brothers.
We're out looking for them," Mr. Smith
stressed. "There are three small boys now
on a waiting list for Big Brothers. We could
easily get more Little Brothers if we had
more Big Brothers."
Sandra Braid, publicity co-ordinator for
the local Big Brothers group, is one of the
new members to the board. The Goderich
public school teacher said of her interest in
the organization, "We see so much poten-
tial in the school situation. You want to do
anything in your power to help."
As part of the renewed organization of
Big Brothers, the local group now has an
office, at McKay Centre in Goderich, and
has a secretary who looks after the office
on a part time basis. For more informa-
tion, interested individuals are encourag-
ed to call the office at 524-4361, contact
their local representative, or Big Brother
President Ralph Smith at 482-7295.
Who makes a Big Brother?
BY SHELLEY MCPHEE HAIST
Ask John MacDonald of Goderich what it
takes to be a Big Brother, and he'll tell you
simply, "It takes time. It takes understan-
ding. It takes a love for kids."
John MacDonald knows what Big
Brothers is all about. He has been a
devoted volunteer to the organization for
more than seven years and, he's been a
good companion to Little Brother Jeff Tun-
ney since he was 6 years old.
Jeff, now 13 years old, has been involved
in the Big Brothers program throughout
his growing years.
"The time has gone by fast," he said.
"Big Brothers is a great organization. We
have lots of different programs and lots of
fun."
Jeff is a busy teenager these days. The
Grade 7 student plays Pee Wee hockey,
he's joining Cadets this fall. He works part
time at Cookie's Cafe and, he enjoys the
many activities associated with Big
Brothers.
You may find Jeff and John at the Park
Theatre taking in a movie. The theatre
