Lucknow electric current went public after Stewart quit
70 years ago
October 10, 1918
Lucknow's lighting problem - The mat-
ter of electric lights in Lucknow reached a
climax last week when Reeve and Council
received written notice from Mr. Stewart
that it is his intention to discontinue sup-
plying electrical current after October 31.
Mr. Stewart gives his reasons for closing
down the fact that under existing condi-
tions the business does not pay. He also
mentioned that Hydro lighting will soon be
introduced by the province or that the town
will have to find some way of owning and
operating a lighting plant.
There are now very few privately owned
electrical plants in Ontario. Having had
the priviledge of lighting in Lucknow, Mr.
Stewart could not legally quit without giv-
ing the village the opportunity to buy the
plant. The law calls for arbitration in the
pricing of the matter.
Christmas for soldiers - At a meeting of
the Lucknow Patriotic League, it was
decided to send "good cheer" boxes to
local boys who are overseas serving their
county. A strong committee of women was
appointed to,prepare the boxes which will
be sent in good time to arrive by
Christmas.

Show horses killed - Two horses dead
and another valueless from injuries was
the toll taken by an early morning CNR
train accident last Friday.
The horse were three of seven owned by
Mr. Dick Martin which broke through the
railroad fence along the track running
across the Martin farm. One colt died, a
brood mare had a leg severed and an older
horse will recover but be left without
value. The two dead were show horses of
considerable value.
Kinloss has paid all claims - After last
week's Department ruling that wolves kill-
ed in Kinloss were actually dogs may have
the Township Council facing action by
livestock owners to recover damages done
by the animals.
Seniors' news
By Christine Gibson
We have been very busy at the day cen-
tre over the past month. Many crafts have
been made for our upcoming annual craft
and bake sale on Thursday, Nov. 24th 1988.
On Sept. 22nd we had a great day visiting
with our guests from the Huron Day Cen-
tre for the Homebound. After a delicious
meal we enjoyed afternoon entertainment
by Earl and Martha Heywood of Wingham.
The show was enjoyed by all who attended.
Many seniors in the area enjoyed shopping
with Hewitt Therapy Services on Sept.
26th. Thank you to our models who
displayed some of the fashions at the
fashion show. Many shoppers updated
their fall wardrobes.
A big thank you goes out to all who sup,.
ported the centre by attending our Annual
Fund-raising Dance in Brussels on Sat.
Sept. 17th. The evening was a huge
success.
Many events have been planned for the
upcoming fall months. Our fall colour tour
will be Oct. 12th. We will be heading to Kit-
chener to celebrate Oktoberfest at Victoria
Place Retirement Lodge. Another outing
has been planned to visit the Gingerbread
Doll Museum in Wroxeter on Oct. 18th.
A reminder to all of our clients and
volunteers that there will be no program
on Oct. 20th due to the Hospital Auxiliary
using the building to set up for their An-
nual Rummage Sale to be held on Oct. 21st.
Our next foot clinic will be held on the
19th. Please phone the centre at 357-1440 or
357-1445 to set up an appointment.
Everyone is looking forward to our after-
noon Halloween Party on Oct. 27th. We will
be entertained by Gord's Old Tyme Music.
Everyone welcome.
As the fall wind begins to blow it is a
good time to invite new clients to the cen-
tre to enjoy our programs during the long
winter months. If you know somebody who
would benefit from our programs please
feel free to contact us at 357-1445 or
357-1440 to find out more about the Day
Centre.
SENTINEL MEMOIRS
If such is the case, then the owners of the
sheep killed will be able to recover the cost '
of the dead animals from the Township.
One cattle beast killed recently has
resulted in a settlement. Other claims are
expected to follow.
Added attraction - The hurdle jumping of
Vic Whitley was an added attraction at the
recent Dungannon Fair. With a crowd wat-
ching, a bystander wagered two bits that
Vic's horse couldn't clear the four foot hur-
dle set up.
He tried it and not once but twice cleared
the barrier.

Fire razes barns - Two rural fires within
four days razed barns in Ashfield
Township last week. The Lgcknoly Fire
Department, under Fire Chief George
Whitby, responded to both calls.
The first fire at the farm of Murray
Rankin destroyed the barn but did not
threaten the house.
The second alarm, Sunday, was at the
farm of Albert McGee and in this instance
the Lucknow Department were credited
with saving the family home. No cause
could be determined in either blaze.
Soldier vote changes results - The
Huron -Bruce election pendulum swung in
favour of Murray Gaunt last week when
the soldier vote was announced. The notice
gave the Liberal candidate a three vote
majority.
The soldier vote, six for Gaunt and two
for P.C. George McCutcheon, gave Gaunt
a total of 6,355.
This is the closest race on record in the
riding and has taken some time to
calculate. Officially, another recount will
be conducted.
Haldenby named G.M. secretary - A
former Lucknow resident, Donald Halden-
by, has been appointed by the Bank of
Montreal as secretary to the general
manager for Ontario the bank announced
today.
Haldenby was educated in Lucknow
before moving to jobs in Walkerville and
London. This new appointment is to the
Toronto offices of the bank.

Pathetic turnout at meeting - Only five of
the village's ratepayers showed up at the
special Ratepayer's Meeting held at the
Town Hall Tuesday. The meeting was
staged to allow citizens the chance to hear
the four councillors and the reeve give an
account of their actions for the last two
years.
Councillors Bud Hamilton commented
how "pathetic" it was that so few people
came out for the meeting.
"I can't understand why where isn't
more people here,"' he said. "People will
stop you on the street or call you at home to
complain, but they won't take advantage
of the opportunity provided by this
meeting."
With a municipal election coming up in
November, a ratepayer's meeting must be
held to provide citizens the opportunity to
question members of council, however, as
Ab Murray commented, this small atten-
dance "hardly makes it worthwhile".
None the less, a summary of the work
completed by council was presented.
