The Lucknow Sentinel, 1988-09-07, Page 5Ramblings of the GM Luclmow Sentinel, Wednesday, September 7, 1988—Page 5 Pat's back from 21 days of freedom By Pat Livingston • Webster, gives many definitions for "holiday". The one I like best is a "a day of freedom from labor; a period of recreation or leisure". Yes, I have just returned from 21 days of freedom from labor; labor referring to what I do on a weekly basis as a means of beipg employed. The first week hubby and I decided to wallpaper our bedroom, which said bedroom is contained m an old farm home, where the ceilings are papered, the walls are crooked and upstair rooms have slant ceilings. It had been some time since the two of us had tackled such a chore together. Now, normally togetherness is everything, right? Not so when you wallpaper! That mass of nerve tissue made up of gray matter, lodged somewhere between my two ears (commonly referred to as the brain) had miracuously erased all recall of the last time we had wallpapered together. It all came rushing back as we attempted to hang the first strip across the ceiling and down the slant and wall. On top of ladders, I was the appointed one to "just guide" the paper, hubby would do the actual applying. Great this should IA easy. Within a very short time, (one minute?) from starting his end, hubby had' the whole strip wrapped arottnd his head and the next minute it was a small gooey ball of paper on the floor. The air was thick with tension and I, the wonderfully, calm, patient type I am, was ready to scream! Which suggestion he jumped at instantly. I came to town to pick up sizing and some other little goodies, I thought might help m making this job less of a hassle, and to cool down. Wednesday dawned hot and humid again, however our tempers were cool and we decided rather than get angry, we would laugh; and did we laugh a lot that week. ! By late Friday afternoon the room was completed, we were very satisfied at the results and we were still married to each other! Since having told this story to some friends, I have learnt that it is apparently a well known fact that you SHOULD NEVER WALLPAPER WITH YOUR SPOUSE! The second week a friend and myself visited my mom in Georgetown. This was definately my idea of a holiday. No housework, except the odd turn at doing dishes. We toured all the shopping malls in the area and generally had a very lazy, fun time. The third week my mom came back with me and while I didn't do anything too strenuous, it just wasn't the same as being away. I always had the guilty feeling I should be doing something like washing walls, scrubbing floors, etc., however, I persevered and took it relatively easy. While Ienjoyed my time away from the office, I really do enjoy coming back. I like my job, the people I meet and the staff I work with. A big thank you to Merle Elliott and Phyllis Matthews who capably helped out at the office in my absence. Birthday Club My apologies to all the little ones whose birthdays were missed in the August 31 issue. The little green gremlins were at work again and put the previous week's ad in. We have included them this week. Heart of Gold While Rob offered his congratultions and thanks to those nominated and the nominators, I wish to include mine. Correction In last week's report on the Lucknow Ar- thitis Society meeting, an error occurred in the name of the person receiving the Blue Bird pin. In actual fact it was Mrs. Sara Ritchie who was awarded the medal for 10 years of continuous service to the organization. TO THE EDITOR To the Editor, I am outraged! The General Council of the United Church of Canada, in their inscrutable wisdom, have betrayed the trust of thousands of faithful clergy. Therefore I have started proceedings to remove my name from the membership in the United Church of Canada. This action has no reflection on the local congregation or its present ministry. I can do this. What can the clergy do? Sincerely, Janet Cook Lucknow EST RATES A 1A3"4% CIC 11 8bYrs. Comp. Ann.
