Same good service,
just a new face
If you pull into the Lucknow Service Cen-
tre today you'll find a new face manning
the pumps. The face belongs to new owner
Rick Jones but you can bet the service will
be as good as ever.
Rick, who lives with wife Lillian and two
chidren, Christopher and Sonia, on their
farm three miles east of Holyrood, took
possession of the garage and service cen-
tre last Monday from former owner
Howard Neable. Rick is originally from
Hanover and has been a mechanic for
some 15 years.
"I'm going to keep up the 'farming,"
Rick told the Sentinel last week, "but the
business will take priority now. I sure hope
to have time for both."
The new owner of the Lucknow' Service
Centre has some immediate plans for the
business which include staying open seven
days a week. As of Tuesday, you can fill up
any day between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m.
"I'm going to do my best to get the
mechanical bays in full operation as well,"
USINESS BEAT
Rick said.
This added service will require the addi-
tion of a Class A mechanic which, Rick has
discovered, isn't easy to find.
Also, Rick tells us the former owner will
still have the used cars for sale on the lot
adjacent to the garage for at least a short
time.
"I expect Howard will come and go here
for a while," Rick explained. "He'll still
have the cars for sale and I hope he'll offer
advice until I get a feel for the business."
Customers in and around Lucknow can
look forward to a grand opening celebra-
tion for the new owners of the Lucknow
Service Centre sometime in September.
Meanwhile, patrons are invited to stop in
anytime and offer their best wishes to Rick
and his staff in their new venture.

Do Bell ads cloud reality?
Dear Sir,
The ad placed by Bell Canada in July 27
editions of daily papers across the pro-
vince is an interesting exercise in clouding
reality.
The wage offer made by Bell and
published in their ad, would be their own
calculations, cause a decrease in real
wages by the end of the three year collec-
tive agreement due to projected rates of
inflation.
The comments on the pension plan
neglect to mention that the company has
refused all attempts to make im-
provements. They also neglect to mention
that their largest subsidiary Northern
Telecom has recently negotiated a
significantly better indexing plan with
other locals of CWC and without the need
to take strike action.
With regard to contractors, part-time
and temporary employees Bell again hides
the full story. While it is true Bell's work

load is flexible we have not called for a
prohibition on the use of method which
would allow the'employer to be flexible.
What we have done is demanded limits on
the use of such services.
Without such limits the job security of all
of our members is threatened as the work
force changes from full to part-time or
temporary. Most of the part-time
employees are guaranteed only four hours
per week, the rest of the time they are ex-
pected to wait by the phone hoping for a
call from Ma Bell that will allow them
enough work to pay their bills.
Many part-timers have 15-20 years of
service and 15-20 years of unsuccessful at-
tempts to become full-time.

Library takes donation
of special video
A video of the much acclaimed sexual
assualt prevention program has been
donated to the Lucknow Library by the
Junior Women's Institute. The film entitl-
ed Feeling Yes, Feeling No is produced by
the National Film Board of Canada.
The video is presented in two parts. The
first section, for parents, introduces the
program and provides parents with infor-
mation and skills to increase their
children's safety in relation to sexual
assault.
This portion of the video will be
presented for interested parents this Fri-
day, July 29, starting at 10:45 a.m. in the
library. It runs 28 minutes and everyone is
invited.
The second portion of Feeling Yes, Feel-
ing No is intended for children aged six to
12. It is comprised of three, 15 -minute
segments and each segment presents in-
formation to the children in a non-
threatening manner by actors from the
Green Thumb Theatre in Vancouver. A
number of children have also participated
in the completion of the film.
This video is available to be borrowed
from the Lucknow Library at no charge for
home use. Arrangements may be made to
bring families or community groups into
the library for viewing.
Other videos permanently housed at the
local library include Keep Out", a safety
film about construction site hazards and
Renovation Zone 1 and 2 which provides in-
formation about upgrading your home's
insulation and heat retaining qualities.
Many other videos are available by
order. Come in and see what your library
has to offer today.
Office hours
for long
weekend
Due to the long holiday weekend this
Monday, August 1, the Lucknow Sentinel
Office will be closed.
We would ask that any advertising and
all correspondents' material be in this of-
fice no latter than 3 p.m. Friday, July 29.
This will allow us ample time to organize
next week's paper as well as giving the
staff time with their families for the
holiday.
Thank you for your attention to this
regard and have a great holiday
profits last year and Bell Canada 'con-
tributed more than $730 million of that
total making the employer the most pro-
fitable in the country.
Bell's employees are in large part the
reason for Bell's success, they are highly
skilled and extremely productive.
We are pleased to read in the paper that
Bell is open to dialogue because every time
they have spoken to us they have indicated
a clear refusal to move off their present
position. We have never considered talking
to a wall as dialogue!
We can't compete with Bell in paid
advertising, nor do we want to try. Our ex-
timates indicate that every time Bell goes
on such a publicity binge its costs $400,000,
which must ultimately be paid by
subscribers. It is clear to us that Bell is
getting desperate and that the strike is
having an impact on their operations
beyond what they are prepared to admit.
Our members who are Bell employees
deserve a real effort by the company to
settle the dispute at the bargaining table
rather than paid misrepresentation on the
advertising pages of major papers.
Yours truly
Richard Long
