we're only
human too
By Pat Livingston
General Manager, Lucknow Sentinel
The newspaper business is, at times, a
very difficult business to be in. Everything
that goes into print is there forever, in-
cluding any errors. They may be spelling
errors, a typo, or a paragraph that has
been deleted.
Due to the nature of the business we are
in, the staff of this office receives many
more darts than they do laurels.
It seems to be ar fact of life that if an un-
conscious error makes it to print, some
readers will become irrate and get
satisfaction out of calling this office and
blowing off their steam. Sometimes, after
explaining how the error could have occur-
red, the caller realizes that we are only
human as they are.
Other times, no matter what the ex-
plaination is, or how many times you
apologize for it, you seem to be wasting
your breath.
As the staff at your local newspaper, we
do not intentionally make errors to pro-
voke an individual or a community group.
We take pridein the work we do, which is
to keep this community informed ahout
local events arid people, and we do try our
very best.
We make every attempt to keep com-
munications open between this office and
you, our readers. The Sentinel appreciates
the support you have given us over the
years, but please remember - we are only
human 'and are occasionally apt to make
an error.
Items submitted for publication in this
newspaper, and any other newspaper in
this country for that matter, are subject to
editing. We maintain the right to change
sentence structure, `correct grammar, and
make deletions as we see fit.
That is part of our job.
When submitting an article for publica-
tion, there are certain areas you could
check to help us ensure your item is
printed correctly the first time:
- Names should be printed. We are not
mind readers and everyone's handwriting
is different.
- Make sure sentences are complete. If you
wish to use point form, we will take the
liberty of writing it in sentence form for
you, but you'll then have to live with the
sentences we come up with.
- When using terminology we may not be
familiar with, make sure it is legible so we
don't have to guess.
- Be sure to use commas and periods where
necessary to denote the end of a sentence
or thought.
We are a comrf'iunity newspaper and the
community is what we are all about. Your
contributions to this paper are always
appreciated.
However, please keep in mind that "to
err is human" and we are nothing but.
