Book your Agricrew
Junior Agriculturalist
Program Ready To Roll
Although the need for farmers for the
Junior Agriculturalist Program has been
fulfilled, interested students may still app-
ly but should do so quickly. Eight farmers
from Bruce County applied and so far six
have had successful matches completed,
with all eight farmers being excellent can-
didates for hosts. These farmers will host
an urban student for a maximum of 50
days sometime between June 20th and
August 19th. For more information call
881-3671.
Agricrew Update
Farmers are encouraged to continue
booking for an Agricrew to help out with
haying, fencing, painting, or even weeding
the potato patch. The Agricrew is still
available for several days from the last
week of June through to August 19, 1988.
Students may still apply to the program
to work as alternates or to be put onto the
waiting list. Access to a car may be an
asset for student applicants. For bookings
or more information call 881-3671. Kent

Sample As You
Fill The Silo
Since summer is approaching and with
the beginning of roughage harvest, it is
time now to start thinking and preparing
for feed analysis.
In order to get a representative sample
of what is in your silo, it is best to sample
as you fill it. Sampling as you fill is not as
time consuming as one might think. Here
is a suggestion.
Have a garbage bag sitting by the
blower. Every two to three loads, put a
handful or two of silage into the.bag. Be
sure to keep the bag tied up between loads
so that the silage does not lose moisture.
At the end of the day, put the sample into
the freezer to preserve it. Do this every
day until harvest is over. At the. end of
harvest, when you have more time, send
the samples to the feed lab. A little extra
thought before harvest can make the feed
analysis results a lot more meaningful
after harvest.

Powder Post Beetles
At this time of year we usually get in-
quiries concerning powder post beetle con-
trol in farm buildings. The first evidence of
powder post beetle injury may be the ap-
pearance of pinhead sized exit holes where
the beetles have emerged through the sur-
face of the wood. In some cases, the first
indication may be the presence of a fine
sawdust dropping from the tunnels made
by the larvae as they burrow in the wood.
As infestation progresses, the larvae bur-
row deeper into the solid wood until its
structural value is destroyed.
What to use: We have been recommen-
ding a paint on substance called Penta and
is available at hardware stores and other
spray outlets.
. When to treat: Late May or early June is
when the adults emerge to mate. The idea
is to apply the treatment when they are out
of the wood. The treatment will act as a
barrier and a deterrent so that the adults
will not want to return.
More information on powder post beetles
is available at the OMAF office.
