The Lucknow Sentinel, 1988-06-22, Page 1*CNA CELEBRATE IN 1988 LUCKNOW'S 130th CELEBRATION JUNE 30 • JULY 3, 1988 PUBLISHED IN LUCKNOW ONTARIO Wednes ay, June 1 98; 40c PER COPY Lucknow plays host to Bruce County Council The Lucknow Village Council played host to the June meeting of the Bruce County Council on Monday and Tuesday of this week. About 35 members of the council spent the two warm days attending to business on the upper floor of the Lucknow Town Hall. Seated on the brand new chairs recently purchased by the Village Council specifically for this meeting, County Coun- cilors spent most of Monday giving and hearing a variety of committee reports. Tuesday brought a day of heated discus- sion on the ..reports and proposals presented the day before. Lunches and dinners were provided for all attending the meeting at the Lucknow Legion. Since the meeting was still going strong at press time, expect a complete report of the proceedings in next week's Sentinel. Village Council meeting Reeve Herb Clark chaired the regular June meeting of the Lucknow Village Council on Tuesday of last week at the Town Hall. Minutes of the May meetings of Council were read and approved before current business was undertaken. Library Advisory Council Represen- tatives Bernice Johnstone and Lorna Guay waited on Council. They attended in sup- port of a letter dated June 8 requesting an air conditioner for the Lucknow Library. After discussing the matter, Council agreed to look further into the matter with the County and gave their support should the libary decide to approach local service clubs for funding. Council moved and carried a motion to support the decision of the Business Association, should one be made, regar- ding the opening of stores on July 1 and Ju- ly 3. The budget for the Celebrate in '88 Reu- nion was presented to Council and discuss- ed. No further action was needed or taken in this regards. It was also noted that a formal notifica- tion for the Lucknow Sewage Works ap- peared in the June 1 issue of the Lucknow Sentinel. This is the 30 -day Public Review for written comments. Na further quotes It was noted at the meeting that no fur- ther quotes have been received by Council for construction of the Town Hall steps. It was decided to hold this matter over until after next week's Lucknow Reunion. A motion was carried showing that Council supports the resolution of the Township of Lindsay to schedule a meeting with the Bruce County School Board to justify the appointments and requisitions. Tom Andrew waited on Council Tuesday evening and stated that a lawyer was preparing an agreement for water service to Ashfield residents. Council to date have had no correspondance with Ashfield in this matter. Mr. Andrew was advised that replace- ment of watermains with a larger size re- quires Ministry of Environment approval and that Council would deal with this mat- ter when the agreement is received. The Bruce County Council held their June meeting upstairs in the Lucknow Town Hall on Monday and Tuesday of this week. With new tables and chairs bought just for the purpose, the councillors attended to business in the hot weather, and took their meals at the Legion Hall. All around the village, home and store owners are cleaning, painting, decorating and preparing for a fun filled long weekend. Jim Bain took on the task of painting the out- side wall of his shop on Monday, and got a little supervisory help from wee Star. She used the ladder to get a real close look at Jim's handl-work. The main street is taking on a new look with businesses decorating their windows, hanging flowers and the decorating committee adding col- ourful touches to the planters. Some of the windows are very interesting and a walk down the street has turned into an intrigu- ing adventure. To date no names have been received for the dunking tank. Any volunteers! Anyone out there who would love to havpthe satisfaction of dumping someone ino the water? Drop your names into the Sentinel or at Lucknow Cut and Curl. Tug -Of -War Murray Irvin of the Agricultural Society is in charge of the tug-of-war and advised the Sentinel that they are attempting to get some competition going between the sur- rounding townships and the village. There are three classes: Boys 17 and Hospital gets The Ministry of Health has approved a Capital Grant of $103,858 for the Wingham and District Hospital, Health Minister Elinor Caplan and the Honourable Jack Riddell, MPP for Huron, announced recently. The grant is based on a total project cost Under, Men's Open and Ladies Open. Miss Celebrate 88• Twelve contestants will compete in the Miss Celebrate in 88 Pageant on Thursday, June 30. A concert will kick off events at 8:15 followed by a dance to Crippled Ducks at 9 p.m. The girls will make their first stage appearance at approximately 10:30 with the crowning at 11:30. The beards will also be judged during the evening. The Celebrate in 1988 committee has worked long and hard at scheduling events for everyone. Make sure you participate in this fantastic celebration. the cash of $185,861 and will be used for replace- ment of windows at the hospital. The construction contract has been awarded by the hospital to the lowest bid- der, Abelson Window Inc. Work is scheduled to begin immediately.
