Twelve leaders survive Access Awareness Day
By Gloria Workman
Twelve very brave leaders from
Wingham and surrounding area survived
Wingham's Access Awareness Day on
Monday, May 30th. We are very grateful to
these twelve people and all the volunteers
who helped inake this day a success. The
day was scheduled to make the public
aware of the need to make our community
accessible to everyone. These community
leaders were given the chance to see the
Town of Wingham from a completely dif
ferent point of view.
While simulating various disabilities,
these people were given a simple task to
perform in the community; while
simulating having the disease "Multiple
Sclerosis" by wearing oven mitts, the per-
son was required to make a call using a
payphone.
When everyone returned from perform-
ing their tasks, we talked about some of
the problems faced: slanted sidewalks
made it difficult to maneuver a wheelchair
in a straight and narrow path, traffic lights
didn't give people with walkers a chance to
cross the street in time, traffic seemed to
speed up when crossing the street and so
on. Many existing problems were brought
to light.
One of the leaders invited the public to
keep pressuring the decision -makers to
make changes that will make our town ful-
ly accessible to all. A film entitled "It's a
New Day" was also shown. It was a very
entertaining way of showing the public
that the disabled can do anything they set
their minds on, some may have to use
special equipment or aids to reach their
goal.
Many agencies that serve this area were
also on hand to present displays and to talk
about the various services their agencies
provide.

wheelchair clinic to individuals to replace
small items on Friday, June 24th. The
clinic is sponsored by Ontario March of
Dimes, Major Medical and the Day Centre

We have many activities p1' ^^ed for the
month of June, which hapl da-
tional Seniors Month. At the b, ting of
the month we saw a film called "A Dif-
ferent Approach" about Employment for
the Handicapped. It was a very interesting
way of getting the message across that if
given the chance the disabled can do any
kind of job. We borrowed the film from the
March of Dimes. It is well worth seeing.
This week we will be doing our share of
community service work; we'll be making
tray favours for the Wingham Hospital
Auxiliary. We will also begin stitching the
new quilt that we have started. During the
week of June 14-16 we'll be hosting a
Games Afternoon on each program day.
Seniors are invited to join us and "par-
ticipate". On June 21st, we will have a
special guest speaker: Pat Smith and
Speech Pathologist from the Wingham
Hospital will show a video and then talk
about what she does to help adults regain
lost speech.
It is the beginning of the Blyth Festival
Theatre Season. Our . first play will be
"Mail Order Bride" on June 23rd. The last
week in June, you will not find us at the
centre, you will have to look in the park
where we will be enjoying our annual

ing its problems. But if you keep physical-
ly and mentally active, it brings its
rewards as ell." (Author Unknown)
"The Talk of The Town
There's just a little over three weeks un-
til the Celebrate in '88 Reunion. The
members of the Horticultural Society and
individuals around town have been busy
planting flowers in the flower planters and
flower beds to make a warm welcome for
our visitors. The new flower bed in bet-
ween the river and the highway in front of
the school is an attractive addition and
spells out "Lucknow '88".
Sympathy is extended to the family of
Mrs. Clara Webster who passed away in
Wingham Hospital, May 29 and also to
Warren and Marion Zinn in the passing of
Warren's mother in Goderich Hospital.

heart attack the day after he moved here

wish him a speedy recovery and that they
will have a happy retirement in Lucknow.
