The Lucknow Sentinel, 1988-06-01, Page 13Sykes tourney MVP The Lanes Lords and the Port Albert Bulldogs held their Sixth Annual Slowpitch Tournament over the long Victoria Day weekend and while the play began on a wet Friday evening, the sunshine during the day Saturday and Sunday provided players and fans with perfect conditions. When the final out was called Sunday evening, the team of Goderich Chrysler were the 'A' Division champs. The Chrysler team defeated Kingsbridge by a score of 9 - 5 to take the title. Chrysler's Dave Sykes was named as the most valuable player of the winning team. The Glen Kemp Memorial Award, presented each year to the most dedicated and sportsman like player in the tourney, went to Keith Good of Goderich Chrysler. From the `A' Division runners-up Kingsbridge, it was Paul Adams taking the MVP award. Two other teams, Kinloss and the Lanes Lords, were 'A' Division semi-finalists SPORTS during the event. On the 'B' side of tourney play, it was the Dearborn Steelers of Goderich taking the championship title by defeating Nile in the `B' final by a score of 13 - 6. Dave Sleigholme of Dearborn was the MVP in the `B' Division while Dwayne Rivett of Nile was awarded the MVP trophy for the runners-up. Other semi-finalists on the `B' side in- cluded Chisolm's TV of Goderich and the Dungannon Blue Devils. All in all, it was a fine weekend of ball and a great way to kick off a busy season for local players. Thanks and congratula- tions are to be offered to organizors and officials. The Kinlough Anglican morning service for Sunday next, June 5th, will be withdrawn in favour of the Kinlough Presbyterian Church's 125th Anniversary. Edna and May Boyle accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Jack Scott of Ripley to the "Open House" and Tea on Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Scott in honour of their daughter Heather whose wedding is on Saturday, June 4th. Fun. for all at dance A funfilled evening was held last Thurs- day evening in the Parish Hall with an Old Time Family Dance sponsored by the Community School Association. With Tif- fan's Orchestra providing the music and Horace Crawford calling off for square dancing, young and not so young alike got up and joined in the fun of learning how to square dance. The C.W.L.'s annual Garage Sale was held on Saturday, May 21st and once again proved very successful with many items and much baking being sold. ' The Knights of Columbus held their regular monthly meeting in St. Joseph's Parish Hall Tuesday evening May 17th. This year the K. of C. Communion Breakfast will be held in St. Augustine Church Hall on June 5th at 11:30 a.m. This event is open to all members and wives. Parishioners as well are invited to attend this special event. Congratulations to the candidates who received the Sacrament of Confirmation from his Excellency Bishop Sherlock on Tuesday evening, May 17th at St. Peter's Church in Goderich. Following the beautiful and impressive ceremony, a reception was held in the church hall.
