The Lucknow Sentinel, 1988-04-06, Page 3Progress payments made
to Lucknow and Ripley
The Village of Lucknow has received
grant funds totalling $200,000 to be applied
to the cost of completing the design
engineering for the proposed sewage
works system. The announcement was
made earlier this week by Ontario En-
vironment Minister Jim Bradley and the
Hon. Murray Elston, MPP for Bruce.
The money authorized is what is known
as a Progress Payment, according to
Lucknow Reeve Herb Clark, and is part of
the ministry's total grant committment of
about $4,246,000.
A Progress Payment such as this will be
made by the government following each
stage of work on the sewage works system.
The total cost of the project has been
estimated at $5,027,000.
This most recent payment has been
authorized for the 1988-89 fiscal year.
Grant to Ripley
The Village of Ripley was also on the
receiving end of a government grant this
week. At the same time Mr. Bradley an-
nounced funds for Lucknow, he and Mr.
Elston authorized funds totalling $175,000
for completion of a design for a sewage
works system for residents of Ripley.
This system will include collector
sewers and treatment works and will run
up a bill of some $1,631,000 before it is com-
pleted. The ministry has committed grants
totalling $1,386,000 towards this project.
As with the Lucknow grant, these funds
are Progress Payments and not additional
funding.
County to review
tourist activity
For a number of years now increasing
numbers of visitors have been coming to
Huron. It It is now time to review this ac-
tivity so that we can use it to best advan-
tage, and plan better for both our residents
and visitors.
The Huron County office of Planning and
Development has therefore commissioned
a research study on tourism development
within the County. This project is part of a
longer term study concerning the potential
for tourism development within the
County.
The present project will focus on local
residents' attitudes and- reactions to
tourism. It is based on the belief that the
aspirations of the local communities are
central to a healthy tourist industry, and to
the `welcoming feel' of a destination area.
For this reason a full spectrum of the
views held by residents of the county is be-
ing sought.
The study will involve interviews with a
range of residents, and community and
tourist industry leaders. The objective is to
discover the major concerns, both positive
and negative, surrounding tourism.
Following the interviews, a survey of
residents will be made to explore these
issues in greater detail. Should residents
receive a survey form, they are urged to
respond, even if they believe that they
have little to offer the study. The aim of the
study is to hear the full range of opinion
about tourists and visitors.

Because a limited number of survey
forms are sent out it is important that
those who receive them attempt to com-
plete their surveys and return them. "In
an important way those who are sent a
survey `represent' others in the County,
who may hold similar views" says Mr.
Simmons. Everyone's views are therefore
important to the study.
The study is being undertaken by Mr.
David Simmons, a visiting faculty
member of Lincoln University College,
New Zealand. Mr. Simmons has been in-
volved in a number of tourism studies in
New Zealand and while in Canada is based
at the University of Waterloo. The present
study will contribute to his Doctoral
research.
