The Lucknow Sentinel, 1988-03-30, Page 7Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, March 30, 1988—Page 7 In praise of that ever faithful crossing guard The Talk of the Town Through sun or rain Cold or Snow He watches the children Go to and fro What a relief it must be for parents to know there is a crossing guard there at the corner to help their children go across the busy highway when they are going to or coming home from school. Four times a day he leaves whatever he is busy doing to be at the corner of Havelock and Campbell Streets when it is time for classes to start or finish. So to Albert Lennips, we say thanks for your faithfulness and concern for the future generation. Sympathy is extended to Gertrude Led- dy and family in the passing of her brother, John O'Connor. Fran McQuail, Lucknow Librarian reports there is "Fill a Bag Book Sale" in progress at the Library as they are selling TO Dear Editor; Re: The proposed by-law forbidding the discharge of firearms in Ashfield Township. It seems people have become upset with the irresponsible actions of certain hunters during November's deer season. For ex- ample, some hunters are ignoring clearly marked no trespassing signs and/or fail- ing to obtain permission to hunt from the property owners. There have also been in- stances of the unsafe firing of weapons; for instance, shooting across a public road. As we understand it, the proposed area to be regulated is part of the lake range in Ashfield Township. Yet, the problems stated above are not isolated to this one area. If this by-law should come into effect it would mean that absolutely no-one would 'be able to discharge a firearm for any reason. I am afraid I do not find this very realistic for several reasons. 1. Are farmers' suppose to allow their crops and fields to be ruined by deer, groundhogs and other rodents? 2. Are farmers to allow a rabid animal to infect their livestock? 3. Why should people who enjoy practis- ing their marksmanship on Targets or by skeet shooting be prevented from doing so? 4. There is every possibility that should this by-law be enacted that it would necessitate the hiring of a by-law officer. The end result is higher municipal taxes for everyone. I sympathize with the problems created by those hunters who have not acted responsibly. But, I see no reason why everyone else should suffer for it. There are laws that deal with trespassing as well as the proper use of firearms. However, there is nothing the authorities can do if the) are not contacted at the time of an in- cident or if they are not contacted at all. If the purpose of this by-law is to prevent the dangerous and inconsiderate actions of a certain few hunters then it, is pointless. If people will not contact the authorities regarding the hreaking of the existing laws; why would they for a by-law contravention I,oralee Howes .1Iex Howes The Trinity 441 Club held their first 'En- counter the Outdoors' meeting last Friday, March 25. The meeting was begun when Suzanne Andrew introduced the new members of the club. The officers were elected at this meeting.
