W.I. social evening
The Women's Institute Social Evening
and euchre party with eight tables in play,
was held on Monday last in the Holyrood
Hall. Highest score for the men was David
Elliott and the low score was Currie Col-
well. High lady was Mrs. Harold Smith and
low, Mrs. David Moffatt'.
Mr. and Mrs. Francis Boyle, Ripley,
visited on Tuesday evening with Mrs.
Frank Maulden.
Mr. Edbert Bushell has been a patient in
Kincardine District hospital. We send our.
get -well wishes.
Sympathy is extended to Mrs. Olive Han-
na and family in the death of the late Ernie
Hanna. The funeral was held at the
McPherson Funeral Chapel, Teeswater, '
on Wednesday afternoon. Relatives,
former neighbours and friends from here
and distant areas attended.
Mr. and Mrs. Mac McDonald of Kincar-
dine and his parents Mr. and Mrs. Tom
McDonald of here visited on Saturday with
Mrs. Essie Bloomfield at Paisley and Mr.
and Mrs. Clare Bushell, Kingarf.
Matthew Burt of Toronto enjoyed the'
holiday here with his grandparents Mr.
and Mrs. Bill Burt.
Mr. and Mrs. George Burt and family of
Toronto and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Burt and
Terry Burt were dinner guests on Sunday

Mrs. Agnes" Hodgins and Mrs. Bessie
Maulden were dinner guests on Friday
with Mr. and Mrs. Don Bushell. It being
the occasion of Bessie's birthday.
Mrs. Bill Burt went to Milton to attend a
bridal shower for Miss Judy Storey. Ber-
nice will return home on Monday with
Pastor and Mrs. M. Christensen who will
spend Monday at Milton.
A visitor with Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Lane
was Meg's sister who helped her while con-
valescing after surgery.
Mrs. Charles Murray and Mrs. Douglas
McEwan from the Holyrood Women's In-
stitute attended the workshop "Re charge
your battery" at Walkerton on Tuesday.
Visitors on Sunday with Edna and May
Boyle were Mr. and Mrs. Clare Snarling of
Walkerton. Douglas Spading of Stratford,
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Helfenstein of
Teeswater.
Mr. and Mrs. Ellwood Elliott Bruce and
David were guests at the. Miller -Thompson
wedding near Georgetown on Saturday.
Hospital board approves
annual operating budget
The 1988-89 operating 'budget of
$7,514,295 for the Wingham and District
Hospital has been accepted by the
hospital's board of governors.
The budget proposal was presented by
the finance and audit committee at the
board's regular March meeting.
Committee chairman 'Marian Zinn and
hospital director of finance, Gordon Bax-
ter told the board the document as
presented is basically a break-even
budget.
In the 1988-89 budget, 88.8 per cent of the
total revenue will be from a $6,670,800 On-
tario Ministry of Health allocation, with
the 11.2 per cent balance coming from
other sources of revenue - interest income,
dietary recoveries, income from self -
paying, non-insured customers, and other
areas amounting to $843,495. The ministry
funding represents a four per cent in-
crease over the budget allocation in the
last fiscal year.
On the expenditure side of the ledger,
salaries and wages is the single largest
item,' accounting for 69.6 per cent of all ex-
penditures or $5,226,857. Next largest item
is $1,144,477 for "supplies and other ex-
penses", representing 15.2 per cent of the
total.
Other expenditures are: employee
benefits, $549,306, 7.3 per cent; medical
staff remuneration, $171,050, 2.3 per cent;
medical and surgical supplies, $141,420, 1.9
per cent; depreciation, $138,900, 1.8 per
cent; drug expenses, $138,575, 1.8 per cent.
The hospital's fiscal year begins May 1,
1988 and ends April 30, 1989. In relation toy
application of funds, Mr. Baxter told the
board $167,094 is designated for the pur-
chase of operating equipment while
$520,614 will be applied to two major pro-
jects - the balance of the current in-
cinerator project (approximately $160,000)
and the window replacement project
scheduled to begin soon (approximately
$360,000).
Kits are distributed for April cancer canvass

The Resolutions meeting of.the Kairshea
Women's Institute was held March 24th at
the home of Mrs. Frank MacKenzie. The
President Mrs. William Haldenby welcom-
ed everyone to the meeting, followed with
the reading of the Scripture by Mrs. Harry
Lavis.
Mrs. Murray Keith read the minutes of
the February meeting and the cor-
respondence. A donation of $25.00 was
voted to the Lucknow Agriculture Society. -
Committees were chosen for the Craft
Festival and display for the Fall Fair.
Mrs. Cliff Roulston was chosen as a
delegate to the Conference in Kingston.
Sheets were distributed to members as
to the trip in May. Canvas kits were given
out for April Cancer canvas.
The Current Events were by Mrs. Harry
Lavis followed with a reading by June
Gilchrist - "Spring Fever".
Mrs. Evan Keith had the topic "Buy
Canadian". Canada imports $87 billion
goods from other countries while 80% of
Canadian goods are much better than im-
ports. It was suggested that we check for
labels on clothes that say Canadian made.
The April (annual meeting) will be held
at the home of Mrs. Gordon Wall Wingham
April 21st - 11 am. Courtesies were given
by Mrs. Evan Keith.
