The Lucknow Sentinel, 1988-03-30, Page 3That mad turkey was no April fool Call him .,► April Fool if you like but our . litor, Rob Bundy, had a strange ex- perience on Monday that will could have him labelled a turkey. The encounter with the UFO's (Uniden- tified Feathered Objects) occured just afternoon on Highway 1 between Lucknow and Holyrood on Monday last. While retur- ning from Kinlough, Mr. Bundy noticed three very large birds standing at the side of the road. Slowing down for a closer look, it became evident that the birds took an im- mediate dislike for his small, blue Chevy. The trio, two females and a large male, ap- peared to be wild turkeys and as the car approached they became quite distressed. From a distance of about ten feet, the huge male bird puffed himself up and began a mission of protecting his "girls". He ran full steam at the car, which had by this time been brought to a halt, and pro- . ceeded to peck with some vigor at the front. grill. Not quite believing his eyes, Hob tooted on'the horn to clear the indignant fowl trout his path, but to no avail. Instead, the terrifying turkey came 'round to the drivers' side of the car andbegan pecking at the window! . Eye to eye with the most vicious beak he had ever seen, our fearless editor was ready to flee...except that the other two birds had moved closer and were now in the middle of his path of escape. Bewildered but still not willing to run over the birds, Rob edged slowly forward. This move envoked another stream of pecks on the window from the protective male, who by this time appeared quite upset with the whole affair. Finally, the ladies moved aside and Rob was able to keep on his way, but not until the male had run beside the car offering squawks that seems to say, "And don't you come back!". Back in the safety of Lucknow, Mr. Bun- dy looked high and low for someone to believe his tale...but was greeted only with laughs and strange looks from those he told. No, he didn't have his camera with him on the trip north from the village, henc there is no real proof that this inci- dent actually occured. Mr. Bundy would be most grateful if so- meone...anyone...would call to confirm his story about the three wild turkeys wander- ing the road early this week. Did anyone else get a glimpse of them, or was this just an elaborate April Fool's prank at the expense of our editor's sanity? It could be that he's been working too hard....
