Easter is in the air when. UCS units gather
Unit One
Unit 1 of the United Church Women met
March 1st at the home of Lois Waldens
with an attendance of 11 members and one
visitor.
Laura Hare opened with the poem, Let
me be a little kinder, followed by the
hymn, "Lord speak to me that I may
speak." The fellowship of the least coin
was participated in.
The minutes were read and approved,
followed by the roll call, which was an act
of kindness given or received. Members
not present for last month's roll call paid
their membership fees.
Myra Gracy is to be our Thankoffering
guest speaker on April 12. Anyone desiring
to buy Easter eggs may do so from the
C.G.I.T.
The mystery jar was passed around and
a penny for each inch of your waistline was
donated.
The next month's meeting at. Pinecrest
Manor was planned for. The treasurer
reported, with Jessica Hare taking the of-
fering and donations for the blanket fund.
The Bible Women, Leah, was given by
Phyllis Morrison. Laura Hare gave a poem
entitled gratitude, followed -by the scrip-
ture reading by Helen Hackett on the
parable of the sower. The meditation on
Nothing is too good for a friend, was taken
by Laura Hare. After the hymn, "Thank
you Lord", Helen Hackett read a poem,
The Good Neighbor in keeping with the
theme, Sowing Seeds of Kindness. "Jesus
calls us", was sung after which the
meeting was closed with prayer.
A social time followed.
Unit Two
Unit 2 of the United Church Women met
at the Sepoy Apartments on Tuesday
March 1 at 2:00 p.m. Mrs. Mary. Loth
welcomed everyone.
We had 10 members and seven visitors
answering the roll call with Thoughts of
Spring.
Mrs. McFarlane opened with a poem To
Morrow, and made the following an-
nouncements: World's Day of Prayer Fri-
day March 4 at 2; Bruce Presbyterial was
on Monday, Mar. 7. Thank Offering and
C.G.I.T. will again sell Easter eggs.
Mrs. Hackett collected monies for the
Blanket Fund, Pray for Least, Coin Offer-
ing and fees. Four birthdays added funds
to our birthday jar. Mrs. Stella Tilbrook
read the Scripture from Isaiah 58, Verse
11. Meditation: A Prayer of Faith and we
sang the hymn "Will Your Anchor Hold".
The minutes were read with a correction
and approved. Mrs. Hackett gave the
Treasurer's Report. The Offering was
taken and dedicated by Rev_ McFarlane_
Mrs. McFarlane thanked the hostess and
her committee and we all repeated the
benediction. The committees served a
lovely lunch and a social time was
enjoyed.
Unit 3
Unit 3 of the Lucknow United Church
Women met at the home of Mrs. August
Lemoine on Tuesday, March 1. A total of 12
members were 'present for the meeting.
In the absence of Mrs. Albert Cook, Mrs.
Vern Hunter presided and opened with a
reading entitled "What tools help us turn a
house into a home".
The roll call was answered with each
member naming a favorite room in her
home. The minutes were read and approv-
ed before Mrs. Hunter gave the an-
nouncements and Mrs. Bolt gave the
treasurer's report.
Mrs. Jardine and Mrs Dexter have
March birthdays and birthday offerings
were taken.
Mrs. Hunter gave a missionary reading
on India and we gathered the offering for
the Least Coin. Mrs. Goodhue gave a
reading, "Good advice on this day".
Mrs. Evelyn Henderson read the scrip-
ture while meditation and the prayer were
given by Mrs. Hunter.
Mrs. Dexter read the missionary story
on how various houses are built in the
Third World with mud. Several people
gave their definitions of a home and also
some fond memories of homes they have
had. Mrs. Black followed with two
readings, "Houses and Homes" and
"Labour and Love".
CHURCH
Shirley Bolt gave a reading, "As long as
there are homes" followed by Mrs. Hunter
with an interesting presentation on
building a home. She said it involves love,
kindness, goodness, and wisdom.
We closed the meeting with "Home
Sweet Home" with Mrs. Edith Webster at
the organ. Mrs. Black thanked the hostess
and everyone who helped with the pro-
gram. The UCW Benedition closed the
meeting and the lucnh committee served
refreshments for the social time which
followed.
Unit 4
The Lucknow Presbyterian Evening
Auxiliary members were the guests of
Unit 4 of the Lucknow United Church
Women during their March 1 meeting held
at the United Church.
Mrs. George McBride welcomed the
ladies and Mrs. Robert Finlay read the
story of The Least Coin. This was followed
by prayer and the collection of pennies.
Mrs. Wm. Henderson of the
Presbyterian Evening Auxiliary chaired
the meeting and opened with a reading a
prayer.
A hymn was sung by all and the Devo-
tions were given by Mrs. Jessie Johnston.
Two lovely solos were rendered by
Marion Raynard with accompaniment by
Mrs. Bruce Raynard on the piano.
Mrs. James Aitchison gave two in-
t"resting readings followed by a piano duet
by Mrs. Bert Moffat and Mrs. Henderson.
The offerings were received and blessed
by Miss Maudie Fisher. This was followed
by the singing of another hymn.
Mrs. Henderson introduced the guest
speaker for the meeting, Mrs. Bill
VanDerKlippe, who 'gave a most in-
teresting slide presentation and talk on the
work she and her husband did in the
remote villages of Mexico. The couple
spent some five years as missionaries in
Mexico, sponsored by the. Christian
Reform Church Relief Committee. They
taught and helped those less fortunate with
health and sanitation concerns.
The meeting closed with a hymn follow-
ed by prayer from Mrs. Allison Ramsay.
The ladies then divided into several
smaller groups for two Irish contests con-
ducted by Mrs. James Boyle. Lunch and
socila time followed.
Generous donation to Foundation
St. Helen's W.I.
The March meeting of the St. Helens
Womens Institute was held in the hall on
Thursday afternoon beginning at one
o'clock with dessert.
Seven members answered the roll call
with an Easter verse. In the absence of
both the president and secretary -
treasurer, Mrs. Leila Strutton presided
and Mrs. Norma Raynard recorded the
minutes.
During the business a letter from the
Heart and Stroke Foundation was read and
the members voted to send to it a generous
donation. It was also decided to send a
donation of $25.00 to the Lucknow Fire
Department. Mrs. Leila Strutton repor
on her day at Leadership Training at East
Wawanosh Conservation Area for the up-
coming 4-H Project "Encounter the Out-
doors". The members were pleased to
learn that Mrs. Arlene Turner is to assist
with the leadership. Group 5 reported on
plans for the Sunshine Sister Banquet with
dates of April 11 or 12 depending on the
availability of the caterers. Group 2 in
charge of card party on Mar. 14 and Group
3 on March 28. Group 1 is in charge of
Library for March.
Program and lunch were in charge of
Miss Isobel Miller and Mrs. Luba Strutton.
Mrs. Elaine Errington read the Minutes of
Yesteryear 1975.
Mr . Celia Aitchison read the topic
"Easter" prepared by Mrs. Edith Cooper.
It outlined the celebration of Easter by
many tribes and countries. It nothd the red
colour used in decorating eggs represents
the sun, fire and the blood of Christ.
The white used in Easter decorating is
the sign of purity,' joy and light. It is
thought to be unlucky not to wear
something new at Easter, because it is the
casting off of the old and the beginning of
something new.
Readings "12 Thoughts to Live By", and
"Complaint" were given by Miss Isobel
Miller and "Vocabulary of Spring -Time"
by Mrs. Leila Strutton."
The meeting closed with the singing of
"0 Canada".
