Local Tykes get first
taste of tourney action
Lucknow Tykes
The Lucknow Kinsmen Tykes had a
taste of their first tournament action of the
season as they competed in the Lucknow
Legion Tyke Tourney held last weekend.
The team had high hopes in this tourney
but were somewhat brought back to reality
in their first game as they were soundly
defeated 14 - 3 by the eventual tournament
champs, Blyth.
Lukcnow goals in the first game came
from Ean Moffat with two and Craig Mof-
fat with a single. Nathan Ferguson picked
up the team's only assist.
The fortunes of the team swung m the
other direction in game two as Lucknow
was matched against the Teeswater
Tykes. The Lucknow Racers, as so aptly
named by Cam Moffat, came out 9 - 1
winners.
Ean Moffat again led the scoring with
five goals. Craig Moffat added another two
while Michael MacGillivray and Mark
Stanley chipped in singles.
Assists were credited to Conor
McDonagh, Michael MacGillivray,
Jonathon McKinnon, Michael Wyndham,
Gregg Courtney, Adam Cameron, Taylor
Mali, Luke Skipper and Mark Stanley.
The boys played a strong game against a
team they have only been able to tie in the
past.
This win against Teeswater sent them to
the Consolation Final against a powerful
Brussels team. Ean Moffat again got his
team going in the first with an unassisted
marker before Brussels came back with
two goals late in the first.
Jonathon MacKinnon's goal in the se-
cond, with assists to Cam Moffat and Jor-
don Andrew, pulled Lucknow into a 2 - 2 tie
before Brussels responded with another
late in the second to take a single goal lead
into the third.
Knowing they had a tough period ahead
of them, the Racers came out at full speed.
They outplayed their competition but
•!ould only manage to again pull even on
Ean Moffat's second on the night. Assists
on the tying goal went to Mark Stanely and
Jonathon MacKinnon.
A shoot-out system had to be used to
break the tie and Lucknow, unfortunately,
came up on the short end of the stick after
each team sent five shooters in against the
oppositions goalie.
Although quite disappointed at the final
buzzer, the Lucknow boys received a ban-
ner and a great deal of valuable ex-
perience in their three games played in the
tournament.
The team would like to thank the
Lucknow Legion for hosting this tourney
as well as the Lucknow Minor Hockey
System for their contributions.
Thanks to volunteers
A big 'thank you' is to be offered to the
ten youngmen who donated their time and
talents to act as officials for this Tyke
Tournament. These good folks took a
minimun of three hours of their day to help
make the tourney a big success.
The officials, rather than earning money
with their whistles elsewhere, earned only
hot chocolate over the weekend.
For the officials, the games provided a
smile or two and may have provided a new
perspective on the value of games such as
this. The top smile of the weekend came
when one official reported that he noticed
a happy player singing nursery
rhymes...during the play.
The fine officials for this tourney were
Kent Campbell, Kevin deJong, Tom
Gilmore, Randy Guay, Craig Irwin, Larry
MacPherson, Sam Murray, Joff Pollard,
Dave Shuler and John Vandervelde.
Organizors of the event would like to
acknowledge the fact that this tourney
could not be held without the volunteers.
They appreciate the high quality of the
work which was done.
From everyone involved in the tourney,
from the little guys and gals on up, thanks
for making the 19th annual Legion Tyke
Tournament such a success.
