The Lucknow Sentinel, 1988-03-02, Page 9Christian Farmers to
raise some eyebrows
The Christian Farmers Federation of
Ontario will stage a public information
meeting in the Lucknow Community Cen-
tre on Thursday, March 10 starting at 1:30
p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to study
the implications of the family farm
stewardship philosophy for 1988 and
beyond.
"We hope to raise a few eyebrows at this
meeting," says Elbert van Donkersgoed,
director of the CFFO's Research and
Policy Department, who will act as the
guest speaker for the meeting. "We'v
solved the production problem. We us
supply management to control milk and
poultry production. Massive subsidies are
needed to pay the bills of grain producers.
How can we unhook from production and
maintain a family farm stewardship
philosophy?"
Mr. van Donkersgoed told the Sentinel
that the meeting will serve to touch base
with the members of the CFFO in this area
as well as provide a time to reflect on the
philosophies of marketing and the need to
decouple farm supports from production.
"We have found in the past that this
topic stirs an excellent discussion," said
Mr. van Donkersgoed.
The CFFO is made up of 21 different
district associations in the province and, in
the words of Martin Oldengarm, General
Manager of the federation, is built by
small, effective groups.
"You don't need to be large to be effec-
tive," he said.
The District Association of the CFFO,
located in Clinton, has a membership of
some 40 people. Lucknow and area pro-
vides about a dozen of these members.
Everyone is welcomed to attend the
meeting next week and can be assured of a
lively discussion following the presenta-
tion by Mr. van Donkersgoed.
