Have fun while fund raising with Ag Society
On Feb. 28 The Ripley Royal Canadian
Legion held its annual public speaking con-
test. For the Juniors the winners were
Brooke Funston 1st, Melanie O'Brien 2nd,
and Rachel Van Rooyen 3rd. Speaking for
the seniors the winners were Vanessa Life
1st, Christine Collins 2nd, and Corey Kum-
mer 3rd.
Special thanks to the judges Dorothy
Needham, Gerry Crooks and Mike Snobelen
also time keeper Julie McGuire.
The first winners in each section, namely
Vanessal Life and Brooke Funston go to the
zone competition in Clinton this Saturday
afternoon March 5 at one o'clock. Thanks
for this note to secretary Terry Paquette.
Euchre party planned
On Tuesday evening March 8 at 8 o'clock

the Ripley Agricultural Society are holding
a euchre party. This is the first one this
year to start the raising of funds for 1988. In
charge of it will be the Ag. Society
presidents Bob and Judy Thompson and the
first vice-presidents Gary and Sharon
Courtney. Then on the second Monday even-
ing, March 14 at 8 p.m. the first regular
monthly meeting of the directors will be
held in the Ripley Huron Central School at
the west end in its regular places.
ANNA ELIZABETH IRWIN
Anna Elizabeth Irwin of Ripley passed
away at her residence on Ripley Street on
Wed. Feb. 24, 1988 in her 73rd year. She is
survived by one daughter, Carol and her
husband John Halliday of Owen Sound, and
five sons, Ronald and his wife Lois of
Ripley, Ernest and his wife Vivian, Burl-
ington, Ken and his wife Teresa of Water -
down, Dennis and his wife Gerrie of Dart-
mouth, N.S., Larry and his wife Marianne of
Ripley and one son-in-law Robert Irwin of
Lucknow, also 13 grandchildren and two
sisters Nan, Mrs. Roy Geddes and Wilda,
Mrs. Wilmer MacKay, both of Kincardine
and two brothers John and Lester Ferguson
both of Huron Township.
Predeceased by her husband Leonard Ir-
win, one daughter Elaine Irwin, one grand-
son Michael, also one brother and one sister.
The late Annie Irwin rested at the
MacKenzie, McCreath Funeral Home for
visitation on Friday and then for the funeral
service on Saturday noon.
EDITH (HUGHES) TRENCH
A second Ripley lady passed away during
the same time period last week as mention-
ed above. She was Mrs. Edith
(Hughes)Trench of Listowel. During school
years Edith will be remembered here as
keeping house for her father, Jim Hughes, a
carpenter. Later Edith went away to
Listowel where she married Morley Trench
from Teeswater.

Grain Farmers
Special Canadian Grains Pro.gram— 1987 Extension.
T
he federal government has •
announced the 1987 extension of
the Special Canadian Grains Program.
The subsidy War- between the United
States and the European Economic
Community is continuing to financially
affect Canadian farmers. This program
will help. offset the low world prices of
1987 grain, oilseed and special crops
caused by this subsidy war.
For crops produced in 1987, this special
assistance has been increased to $1.1
billion. Also increased is the number of
eligible crops.

Farmers who applied for a payment
under the Special Canadian
Grains Program last year should have
already received applications in the mail.
Other farmers can obtain forms by calling
the toll-free number, or by contacting:
• Agriculture Canada regional offices
• Farm Credit Corporation offices
• Offices of hlcmhers of Parliament
• Elevator agents
• Producer ,associations
• Provincial extension offices.
(There is a separate application form for
honey producers.)
A first installment payment
covering about three-quarters of
each farmer's total entitlement will be
made before March 31, 1988. Final
payments will be made by the end of June.
Farmers who do not receive a first
installment payment will receive their
total payment in June.
To be eligible for the assistance, all
farmers must submit an application
form. They must he postmarked no later
than March l6th, 1988.

is March 16th.
