Celebrates 90th birthday February 16th in Ripley was a happy day when Miss Ethel Gawley celebrated her 90th birthday. Relatives and friends gathered at her home to wish her Happy Birthday. Her nieces Marleene Greig and Gladys Johnston acted as hostesses and Janet Nixon and Joan Barr served the birthday cake and tea. It was nice to see Ethel looking so well after a spell of recovery last fall with a broken hip. Folks also enjoyed seeing Mrs. Stewart Needham who also looked well and says she is enjoying the meals and activities at Brucelea Haven. Stewart rests at lot. It was nice to see Ethel able to receive her friends in her own home in the village. And celebrates 95 years Mrs. W.J. Mackay celebrated her 95th bir- thday on Feb. 17th. She still maintains her own apartment at Huron Villa. Her daughter, Marion, hopes to attend a birth- day party on the weekend for family members. Marion broke an arm recently. Best wishes from all her friends to Mrs. Mackay. Our thanks to Gladys Arnold for this news. Houseplant tips given The Ripley and District Horticultural Society met Feb. 16 at Huron Villa in Ripley. One of the first things on the agenda was to wish Mrs. Gertrude Mackay best wishes on the occasion of her 95th birthday. She, in. turn, replied most graciously. The roll call for the meeting 'was a houseplant tip, and 23 members answered this, bringing forward many useful hints for our houseplants. Letter from M.P.P. Murray Elston was eoly to qur questions we had asked him of the p-roblems of the maple tree demise, with the possibility that it be brought up in the next House of Commons. Following other business, the convenor for the meeting, Adelene Hackett, called on Evelyn Irwin who gave some interesting 13y Ab Wylds readings. Marion Gamble entertained with piano music. Edith Smith then spoke on her pas- sion for trees, especially the oak and catalpa and how she had started them from seed. She also spoke on aochimines, a plant that is rarely seen these days. She handed out a few seeds for members to try. Adelene Hackett spoke on all the geraniums etc., that the residents at Huron Villa have growing for the spring garden. The gardens are going to be as colorful and beautiful as ever. She also gave a few tips on forcing branches, i.e. forsythia, pussy willow, and lilac. It turned out to be an in- teresting and informative Horticulture meeting for the society. Special thanks to the ladies of the Villa for their welcome, hospitality, and delicious lunch. Family was from Ripley Ripley news is where you find it especially on days with winter snow blowing like the past days. Take last Sunday — there is the Toronto Star, February 21, 1988 being delivered at the door — we have cleaned the blowing snow away so it can be opened and get the paper inside. The front page has the picture of Brian Orser in red outfit skating on Section A. We go ahead Section B "In- sight". The headline is BOOZE, DRUGS AND AN URGE TO KILL. It is the name of the writer - Marilyn Dunlop, Toronto Star which gets our eye. She is a Feature writer with the Star and background story (mater- nal) is in the Ripley area. We think that the weather is bad here. Well this is what it was like as she writes in the Star. - "Outside the courtroom windows raged. Frobisher Bay, a few mereg om the Courthouse and frozen into high peaks, was invisible in the whiteout. The wind howled. Mr. Justice David Mar- shall of the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories had walked the half dozen blocks from the hotel to the courtroom and he had white circles of frost bite on each cheek."
