The Talk of the Town
The Sentinel Memoirs of Feb. 1938 tell-
ing of the Carnival that celebrated the of-
ficial opening of the arena were of special
interest to me as I was a young competitor
at that event.
According to the original write-up, "Mr.
and Mts. Duncan Keith and their eight
children of Teeswater were big winners
taking three prizes."
When it was coming near time for the
"Largest Family on Skates" event my
youngest brother was lost. How do you find
a five-year-old among a crowd of 1,200? All
ended well when he was discovered in the
dressing room keeping warm.
Being more at home on a pond out in the
field than in an arena and not being ex-
perienced skaters, Dad got a big long pole
and with Dad on one end and Mom on the
other we all were given a special place in
between.
One of the prizes was a bag of sugar, a
very precious commodity to a family back
in the '30s. Just one problem - how to get it
home. With the ten of us plus Marion Mac-
Dougall, our teacher and native of
Lucknow, there wasn't any room in the car
for a bag of sugar. Luckily someone else
from Teeswater volunteered to take it
home for us. Of such small things are
memories made.

panied Dr. Douglas and Laura MacDonald
