We enjoyed using the computers. Friday was really busy. We used the computers for the last time. We had Valentine treats and cards. The Kindergarten II has been measuring objects in our classroom using our bodies, hands, feet and arms. We had a great Valentine party and wish to give a special thanks to the students council and the parents for all the treats we enjoyed. Mrs. Ottewell's Gr. 3 class, has been do- ing Valentine activities and valentine heart flowers. This morning we heard Grade 1 - Grade 3 give speeches. In our class we picked Carolyn Andrew and Erin Meader to speak. Last Thursday we went to Wawanosh Conservation Area. We fed the birds and we played games. We have two birthdays in February - Kelly McNee's and Billy Tucker's. The Dinosaur Den Treehouse Science Lab Olympic Team worked on Valentine centres this week, Our centres had math activities and language skills. We also shared speeches and poems together. We learned a lot from each other and really enjoyed listening! Mrs. Clarke found it ex- tremely hard to send only 4 to speak in the gym! We were very proud of Julia, Cathy, •Caley & Tammy for their super speaking in the gym! - and all our speeches and kms! Mrs. Tebbutt's grade 6 class would like to thank Misti Humphrey and Kerri Snowden for setting up the V.I.P. bulletin board. They had put up keys that said Values to Standards, Youth and the Law, Stealing, Peer Pressure, Authority, Belit- tling Others, and Danger of Drugs. The ti- tle says V.I.P. is: Values, Influence and Peers. On Tuesday, in Grade 4, Portable 2, Sara Cameron brought in nine pups and their mom Duches to school. Sara's mom told Duches to sit and she did. The class got to hold the puppies. She told us to keep the dogs in at night or another animal might kill them or give them rabies. On Wednesday, Feb. 10 the Grade 7A class made a Valentine, heart -shaped cake and gave a couple of the teachers a piece. In gym we have finished our gymnastics Reeve visits Grade Three Wawanosh Nature Centre All the Grade 3 students along with Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. MacDonald visited the Wawanosh Nature Centre on Wednesday, Feb. 10. Despite the fact that we got lost on our way there, it turned out to be a great day. As we walked around the centre, our guides pointed out how animals adapt for winter, including many that hibernate. We saw chickadees, a cardinal, a blue jay, goldfinches, and a downy woodpecker. We learned that a group of cros is called a murder. We some some animal tracks and tried to make tracks like a fox, mouse, and snowshoe hair. It was fun playing the game "Camouflage". Reeve Visits John Gamble, the reeve of Huron Township, visited Mrs. MacDonald's Grade 3 classroom. He told them what being a reeve entails and answered the students' questions regarding his position. He ex- plained one of the project that he and the councillors have been working on. It is to make the house at Point Clark Lighthouse a museum for the summer. In our History class we were assigned to do an interview with Samuel de Champlain. Everyone was put in two's and took turns telling the history of Samuel de Champlain. Three students from our room have organized a Valentine's Pizza Day with activities. Sports News We have now completed our junior floor hockey houseleague. In a close battle, Mr. Culp's team 1, the Eagles finally came in first place. Mrs. Worsell's/Mrs. Blanchet- tes, team 6, the Hawks were in 2nd and Mr. Spittal's team 3, the Flamingos were 3rd. Congratulations to those teams. We have also completed our senior broomball and road hockey houseleague. All teams participated well in these out- door activities. In broomball and road hockey, Mrs. Tebbutt's team 7, the Falcons finished in first place. Congratula- tions! In broomball, Mr. Tremeer's, team 1, the Eagles were 2nd, and Mr. Liddle's team 5 the Woodpeckers tied with Mr. Hazlitt's team 6, for 3rd place. In road hockey, Mr. Tremeer's team 1, the Eagles, tied with Mr. Liddle's team 5 the Woodpeckers for second place. Mr. Hazlitt's team 6, the Hawks were 3rd. Next week, senior basketball houseleague will begin and junior crab - walk soccer will start. The senior boys and girls basketball is well underway in preparation for the basketball tournament. Speeches Brookside Public School held their an- nual Public Speaking Contest on February 11. There were five divisions. The grade 1 and 2 had to say a short memorized verse. The grade 3's did a personal speech that was memorized. Grades 4 - 8 also did memorized speeches of 3 - 5 minutes. The winners were: Grade 1: First: Dillion Moore - Someone Came Knocking; Second, tie: Katie Fisher - The Bluejay and Adam Cameron - I Think Mice /are Nice; Third: Tory Westbrook - Table Manners. Grade 2: First, tie: Cathy Cairncross - Pox, and Mandy Wylds - I Wonder; Se- cond: Melissa Faber - The Snowman; Third: Julia Stecca - Donald Dull. Grade 3: First, tie: Carolyn Andrew - Grandmothers, and Tammy Middlekamp Music Lessons; Second: Erin Meader - This is the House; Third: Cayley Moore - Skating. Grade 4 - 6: First: Michelle MacGillvray - Figure Skating: Second; Adella Andrew - The Olympic Torch Relay; Third: Joan Ferguson - Homework. Grade 7 - 8: First: Joel Wright - Trail Hiding: Second: Maribeth Dawson - :;c;.ialization; Third: Christie Kerr - Jobs. Joel. Maribeth, Adella and Michelle are representing our school at the Lucknow Legion Contest. The contest is on February 26 at 8:00 p.m. Good luck to four people. Congratulations to all the winners' Valentine Contest The Students' Council held a contest for kindergarten to grade 4 on February 12. There were prizes for the students wearing the most pink, white and red and the students wearing the largest and smallest hearts. There were prizes for all who entered and larger prizes for the winners in each class. Congratulations to all those who won prizes. Thanks to the whole ,cnooI including teachers' for all the par- ',r'ination "he contest was a great 'uceess Valentine Dance i;rnnkside Students Council held a Valentine Dance on Friday, February 12 during noon recess Students wishing to at- tend the dance had to be wearing red, pink or white to be allowed in. A large number of students were present and most said they had a good time. The Students' Coun- cil held several spot dances and prizes were awarded to 12 couples.
