The Lucknow Sentinel, 1997-12-31, Page 3Bhiowator District drool Board ath heads . n tiui district by PO Halpin The team that headed the amalgama- , tion committee for the Bruce and Grey county boards of education' has leen acclaimed to head the new Bluewater Distifelschciol Board. Jennifer Yenssen. chair of the Bruce county hoard and of the Local. Education Improvement `Committee, was acclaimed. chair of the Bluewater District hoard on December 17. Acclaimed as*vice-chair is Ron Metz, a Grey county trustee and vice -chair of the I,,EIC. "It goes without saying that these are' challenging times.. However, challenge can be both exciting and invigorating if we are willing' to tackle those Challenges head-on as a team," Yenssen said in her inaugural address.' • Yenssen said the ne,w name for, the hoard signals a new beginning, and urged trustees .to build an 'organAation with a student -centred vision.. "Although it is both appropriate ,and expected -that we should acknowledge'the'. excellence of the past,IT is of vital ;rnpor tance that we'define, for ourselves, .a vision for the new hoard," she. said. • Yenssen predicted that as. the ministry , of education calls more of the shots, local hoards will have less decision -:making .pewe,.r. That .means trustees, win have,. to :'hone their political ,lobbying skills'. • "We 'will ;be; diret:ted to 'do 'more and not, have; as• much autonomy as ,boards have had i -n the past," she said: `Yc'•nssen believes,'it's important for' trustee, to stay in "touch. with' their corn:-: itt oard '1' munities, know local needs,.and make those needs known to the provincial gov- ernment. "They're certainly ,going to be control- ling our finances and if the finances being provided are„not sufficient to proms vide; our students with the services they require. we have to he prepared. to 'lolly long and hard for that.” Vice -chair Ron Moth says the Bluewater board faces tough decisions in the next year. "We'll have a chance to develop" rhi- necer0s•skin, Megi. predicted, referring to criticism. and setbacks trustees are like=' ly to face in the coming term. "Reinember ,the students. We're not. building.a board for next .year but, for 20 years." Metz said the .first stages of ainalga-: mation have gone smoothly, but,the board ' isunder constant pressure to react to min- Istry:directives on short notice. "The .government 'is not giving tis information as fast as I ,would like_it toy so we're going to have to react quickly to a'number•of situations," he said, "What_ I hope is'that vue have, the; patience .and the foresight to. he able to cope with ,the present pantic' so..that we can look long. term Mot described the, job of hair and vice -chair as keeping the :board focusses( andbuinesslike, while helping ailx iiiais ` tration •.make recommi ndatitins that meet • the:reds of students " ne matter what: the pressures, et the .go rriinent' rtindale efertds eniQr staff retaine • by Pat lalpin The director Of edti a toren • fel 'the• l•uewater District Scheel Board :says -schu•ot i ard•;-amalgarn•a tton.,in Bruce and Grey is not' about saving money, ''' The $'1uewater board • .has been criticized for fats ing to reduce senior• admintstratton,'number but edteatton director Paul Martinda'Ie:said, the`• Bruce' aril Grey boards alreadv''speti,d 10-2091c', below ,the , ..average On: administration: H `defend ed the'dectsion'to keep all''' 1; ,senior staff 'during•: the. , early stages of :trail sition to a iaew:board;.
