Hence .when the Bill 160 smke' began to swirl, I did something hor- ' rendous; I read the bill - all 186 pages' (riveting stuff!). Out of respect for those concerned with.education and curious about Bill 160, T would like to share the . foll`owing: The. Advertisement. • the full page, very expensive; very persuasive advertisement (Our education system isn't,'working) purchased by the Ontario Governmentand posted in the midst of the turmoil surrounding Bill 160, and • was perceivedby;'.most people to be about the bill. Of . the six 'items listed on the, blackboard, four are NOT.. MENTIONED IN. BILL 160 at 'allThat would be (1) Understandable report. cards, , (2). Province -wide testing, (3) More, parental involvement' and (4) A back -to -basics .curriculum. The other two, . (5) More teacher time with students, - and :(6) An , end • to larger classes. are there - sort of. The'. concepts aremen• tioned, yes. , The plan to reduce .preparation. periods (prep • tinie) 'DOES :NOT . RESULT IN MORE TEACHER TIME WITH STUDENTS. Students will still have the same number of' classes per day. It results in a heavier 'workload for teachers, who will have less time to help individual students who .need 'help, 'and less time for clubs, sports, and other 'extras." That means LESS teacher time with students. The reference to class e-mail: luetrsentphurontel.on.ca Internet addres8: iattp://vrww/.bovvesnet,cgarn/Lucknow/ sizes refers to the plan to put a 22/secondary and. 25/elementary class ceil- ing on board:average•class sizes. That means class sizes could well be larger from school to school, :it meanssome classes which are smaller. for younger students or for ,special education students may well have to increase in size, and the minister may also . grant permission to' a board for larger classes. .. The other really impor- tantpart Not in the bill, is that the minister may decide how to calculate Members . of the Lucknow Legion and Ladies Auxiliary to Branch 309 stand-in rankkduring the. annual Remembrance Day service held, at St Helen's Last Sunday. They remember those who lost their hves in the war, and those who have sinced passed away. After reading the article in this weeks ,Lucknow Sentinel by David Emslie entitled "Radar Museum Display" I felt it, necessary to'ecpress my concern, To have a radar .museum -dis- play and the hope of a museum in .the, future iii.`Vanastra.is great. Vanastra,' just south of Clinton, was the former Radar Training School ' during W.W.II. Thelargest one in North America, and :had airmen stationed there from the United States, the U.K:, as well as •Canada I feel it hard to get excited 'about donating to. this cause now. 'I' feel one project should be complet- ped from donations before another has begun. .A number.of'years'ago, my late husband, who was one of the many 'airmen who took his radar course at C.F,B." While he Was still working on this, a Radar Reunion, 'was planned andheld at Vanastra, .August 26 - '28,' 1994. In preparation for, this, much work was done to the grounds, including flower beds on either side .of the gates, which were : painted for the occasion When the gates were dedi- :cated..ori August:27,'•1994,.' it was announced; that a plaque had been ordered but not delivered as they ':lacked, sufficient funds.
