Bader Surpriseis putting it mildly after ,it was, ,announced that the Huron Perth District Health Council is expected to. merge with the. Grey Bruce District Health Council`by °April. Huron . Perth DHC Executive Director Fraser Bell said the announce merit last Thursday was bit of a, surprise, and a dis- appointing''one from the Huron Perth point of :view. "There is some com monality with Grey Bruce, but the two together adds nothing to the : health ser- vice .picture for us,"Bell said. Bell' added that the merger has always been an option, for the Ministry of Health,'. but they felt •that adding,; London would be better since that is where the tertiary or high-level patients are sent , He added that the news was kept "surprisingly ' quiet" from the ministry, since some inkling is usu- ally heard before an announcement is made. The Ministry of Health held a meeting with all DHC chairs and executive directors last. Thursday to outline their decisions ,regarding.the restructuring of the DHC system. The existing, 33 DHCs across ' Ontario (Huron Perth was the last one up and run- ning) are expectedto undertakemergers, to reduce the number of DHCs to 16. Considerable work must be done between ,now .and April to deal with staffing/severance issues, .. 'siting issues ,and to' create a newcouncil of volunteer members. Besides : the workload; the geographic distance is another hindrance, .Bell Said. ' "There are ways to get around it, but we are a very person oriented busi- ness," he said. "There •are ways to establish tele -con-• ferences for meetings, foi example,. but there's going to have to; be some`face• to=face tithe too." •Firewood Get ilt Now & Have it ©sly For Next Sewn!
